Weekend Warriors: New Shows and Last Calls
6/27/18
By Nick Dekker
It feels like we’re just getting started with summer, and BAM, already it’s the 4th of July next week. Not to worry, there’s still plenty of time for summer adventures, and the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com help us with planning.
As the weather gets hotter, we tend to look at fun movies to see. Our go-tos are Studio 35 and the Grandview Theater, both of which show free kid’s movies every week. CAPA’s Summer Movie Series is in full swing, too. This weekend they’re showing The Apartment, The Shawshank Redemption (how is that movie 24 years old already?!) and The Sound of Music at the Ohio Theatre.
Sherrie Gallerie hosts a pop-up exhibition this weekend at Wild Goose Creative, titled Nostalgia – Millennial Art Making / Millennial Art Collecting. It sounds like a fascinating look at how millennials process their past. The Pizzuti Collection is featuring an interesting exhibition called Go Figure! It’s focused on different ways the human body is portrayed, and includes a sculpture from Kehinde Wiley.
Red Herring Theatre Ensemble kicks off a special 90-minute version of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream tonight. They’re performing the show, Dream, for free at four different Columbus Metropolitan Library locations this month and next. Shadowbox Live also opens their newest show, Sex, Love and Rock ‘N’ Roll, this Thursday night.
The Columbus Symphony performs twice this weekend; first, there’s a concert of Summer Night Music at the Greek Orthodox Church in Short North (I’ve seen the sanctuary during the Greek Festival, and it’s stunning). Second is their annual Patriotic Pops at the Columbus Commons. This year they’re performing with the Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus.
A lot of last calls for this weekend, too:
Ohio Art League’s Accidental Anthropology
Sisters: The Art of Nigerian Women at the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Carnegie Gallery
An exhibition of photography by Hillary Perhot, Tactile Records, at the Dublin Arts Council
Baby Picasso: Illustration by Jiesen at the Grandview Heights Public Library
Collaborate/Create at the Cultural Arts Center
Just remember to tag your summer arts adventures with #artmakescbus!
Nick is Marketing, Communications, & Events Administrator for the Arts Council. He also leads culinary tours and blogs about breakfast at breakfastwithnick.com. He and his family are currently watching a doe care for her fawn in their backyard… and trying to keep their yellow lab from interfering.

Opera Columbus condenses and translates popular opera
In 2012, Shadowbox Live received a citation for serving and potentially expanding opera’s central Ohio audience in 2012 with their innovative and accessible production of Joel Ivany’s English-language adaptation of La Boheme

STEM Rocks the Box gave me a whole new level of work ethic and confidence that no high school production could provide me. I was able to thrive in a professional working environment with people who had my best interests in mind. From having only a week to memorize lines to getting only one day of tech rehearsal, this fast-paced peer into the "show biz" life gave me a new level of respect for the entire cast and crew of the Shadowbox. I can confidently leave the program saying, "With the help of Shadowbox, I have truly found my calling!
