Lelia Goldoni in Shadows (1958).
'The first independent American movie' is what they say about Shadows. It really does work and it so clearly influenced Martin Scorsese. I don't like the people in it though. The characters either behave like adolescents of the most primitive kind or they dress up like ladies and gentlemen and interact in a pretentiously cultivated way. The adolescent behaviour involves scene after scene of people being confrontational without cause - one person publicly humiliates another when they don’t deserve it, they play games where they bullshit outsiders, they get into fights… Becoming more civilized is presented as the better way, and I suppose it is, but what about people who are good-natured and don't need civilizing? Only the manager of the singer seems like that.
Lelia Goldoni is a great Sicilian beauty though.
