Shadowstone is the result of Spyro failing at the very beginning of Shadow Legacy. He failed to get away from the monsters of the realm upon waking up, but his body refused to stay down.
He remembers very little and, in his world, was the cause of many of his mentors (Ignitus, Volteer, etc) dying due to the massive amounts of dark energy surging through him, allowing him to have a sort of Cynder sized growth spurt.
He's also able to travel between the shadow realm and the normal world thanks to the literal Shadowstone embedded in his chest (basically this world's only way of teleporting when using the specific platforms in certain areas).
