The castle had been worth checking out. There were old castles all over Europe, and Miriam had seen several of them, touring through them and occasionally slipping away from the tour guides. She and Nemiza had done that a number of times together, they determined to show her a world they knew so much more than she. Miriam had loved it, frankly, and news that there was a castle here had sent her scuttling over to see it.
She can’t get too close, given all the restrictions in place. Something about that makes her angry, a little spark of defiance that burns in her gut like a swallowed cigarette ember.
Only looking only keeps her occupied for so long. Soon enough, Miriam’s hunting for someone else in the area, and ends up upon some poor stranger, standing with her hands braced on her hips.
“I’ve never seen a castle quite like this.” Miriam speaks into open air, and wonders briefly if this is a mistake. “Something about the towers, I don’t know. It feels strange just looking at it.”
