Shadrew - The Infinite
Artist: Shadrew
Album: The Infinite

Shadrew is the artistic persona and highschool nickname of the innovative producer and songwriter Andrew Hudson. Shadrew's debut album The Infinite takes us by the hands (ears) and wades us through a thick, lush swamp of textures and sounds, but instead of being grimy and ridden with algae, the sound is more like bubblegum, cotton candy and pretty, viscous syrup (this is also a food blog, don't you know?). Shadrew is the first musician I've come across that has had the idea to combine shoegaze with 8-bit influenced chiptunes. The result is a refreshingly original, unique mix of beautiful wierd-pop dance music, and the opening track Algo System services the listener perfectly in showcasing what this style can do, with an awesome, wonderfully executed drop to boot that is sure to get your head bobbing along. The thick, washy guitar that is keystone to the shoegaze brand plays beautifully underneath the glitchy, adorable gameboy-esque melodic overtones. It sends you cascading down into a pop-frenzied, majestic mountain of musical wonder. The next track, Shiny Porgyon is an ignited, droney wall-of-sound, mush-potpourri-exploded on-the-wall of a song. The fast paced, energetic drums slowly coming in louder and louder, building tension, being multiplied and becoming faster and faster, more chaotic with each bar as the encroaching climax resounds foreshadowed by the climb at the devastating end to this power-driven piece. Abruptly cut off by the signature innocent tweedl-thumb bits of melody, it transitions into the starkly contrasting slower jam of Everything Will Be Okay. A more laid back, appreciative song that shows use a more sensitive side of Shadrew. He's saying “i can make these cool sounds, drone into amazing, powerful songs that grip you by the swing of it with a controlling beat, but lets take a minute to make something that's just simply beautiful, reflecting how we should appreciate the world we live in.” The albeit preachy theme continues onto the even slower, almost ambient track Friends, which spends its opening 2 minutes drifting through a haze of landmark Shadrew texturing that has been explored throughout the better half of the album, but re-contextualized into a completely different manner. Where is this song going? You ask yourself this as the fleeting drums faintly coming in build a tension that is lost with an immediate cutoff to silence. Silence.... Then a pretty harp? We're jumping ships now completely as the song becomes a heavy hitting, dace masterpiece of video-game melody and emotional resolution. If Friends were to tell a story, it would be one about a lonely drift into isolation, and then the sudden euphoria of found friendship out of nowhere. Reflexive of real life, some of our most cherished relationships can seemingly come out of the blue.
Finally, the album says such a tender, loving goodbye with the closing track You Are The Greatest Player. We had a lot of fun, danced a lot, made friends, went to some weird places, and ultimately, Shadrew has shown us something truly one of a kind. However, its unfortunately time to say goodbye for the moment. A somber but caring leave as he waves us off, we wait eagerly for the next release.
