Shaivya Jyamagha - Sundaralekhan - Day 3 - Women-centric Romance

Jyamagha was the youngest in the Yadava line, and so, driven away by his older brothers, he left home with his wife Chitra-Shaivya in search of his own fortune. Despite offers, Jyamagha never married again and was reportedly very besotted with Shaivya (except that one time later, but that's a different story, and I am ignoring it).

Together, they build a new city on the banks of Narmada and name it Mrittikavati. When their kingdom grows, they name it Vidarbha, after their son.

Shaivya was renowned for her physical strength, and I would not be surprised if this scene happened for them at least once.

Women in Mahabharata - Shaivya

Shaivya (or Chitra) is the wife of Jyamagha, a Yadava prince who was ousted from the Mathura region by his older brothers.

Even among a thousand other things, the authors found the time to mention the fact that this lady was physically very strong- Shaivya balavati bhisham.

After being ousted from the Mathura region (still known as Shurasenai at the time), Jyamagha and Shaivya make their way over to the banks of Narmada, where they fight to create a new kingdom, which they name after their son- Vidarbha Mrittikavati.

Jyamagha was very besotted to, and a little afraid of Shaivya. Hence, even in that time, he could not find the justification to marry again, despite not having any children.

Once when he kidnaps a woman from an enemy kingdom to marry, once faced with his wife, Jyamagha flusters and addresses the young woman- Upadanavi, as Shaivya's daughter-in-law.

The woman is kept imprisoned until the couple do have a son, and is then married off to the young boy once he grows up.

A much wilder version of this story (with altered character names) is retold as a part of a Bengali fairy-tale collection (Malanchamala in Thakumar Jhuli or one of the other Jhulis). This story was also made into a B-grade Bengali movie called Roopoban Konya.

Women in Mahabharata - Shaivya Gandhari

She is one of Krishna's wives as per Harivamsha, but is usually not included in the "Ashta-bharya" list. As per her story, Krishna marries her after defeating a bunch of Kings in Gandhara and kidnapping her from her home.

Her sons are Sangramajita, Satyajita, Senajita and Sapatnajita.

She is also known as Sudatta.

She is the second among the two sakhis of Chandravali who butt heads with Radha's sakhis in Roop Manjari's VidagdhaMadhava in order to attract Krishna towards their group.
