Shake This by This Other Eden
Song review: Shake This Band: This Other Eden (https://www.facebook.com/ThisOtherEden) Location: Perth, WA Date of Release: January 2014 Genre: pop/rock/metal Reviewer: Golden Eagle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbGRLv1E9Eg Alright! We have another Perth band for me to do! Since I was disappointed by how good yesterday’s band was, I am certain that this band will give me the fuel for the firey hell I wish to rain upon the anus of Australia! Let’s give this a listen… FUCK, IT’S EVEN BETTER THAN THE LAST BAND! Seriously Perth, how are you guys so fucking terrible at metalcore, but still able to produce some sick as pop punk/rock bands? This band is quite honestly unlike any other band I have ever heard. Obviously you can hear their influences, but the way they are pieced together is nothing short of godlike. Let’s start with the vocals. Holy damn this guy has one hell of a voice. Think Matt Shadows if he had sex with ol’ mate from Four Year Strong (I never bothered learning either of their names). Now it’s one thing to have a good voice, but it’s another thing to be able to write great vocal lines. Thankfully this guy doesn’t have any issues there, making verses radder than the Cheetos cheetah (seriously, how rad is that motherfucker?) and choruses catchier than my herpes. My only issue here is that they seem a bit too far back in the mix in some cases. Not a huge deal though, I can still hear him clearly. Just something to think about. The guitars have some pretty sick riffs. Considering this is a pop rock song, I was actually pretty surprised at the virtuosity of the guitarists. There aren’t any mad shred lord solos or crazy sweeping riffs, not that this song needs that. I’m just impressed by the verse riff not just being palm muted power chords. These guys are playing some riffs sicker than a pedophiles diary entries. Sure there are some sections with just chords, but they know where it’s appropriate and where it’s a good idea to do something a little tricky. If there is anything that I want people to take away from this review, it’s that more pop punk bands need to be less afraid of just sticking to chords. Sure, they work, but when all I hear is the chords, it makes me think that the song was written by (it was at this point that I had been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to think of a witty comparison I could make. I had none. Please feel free to leave your own comparisons down in the comments because I can’t be fucked). Now onto my only real beef with this song. The bass and drums are depressingly average. Like nothing too special about them at all. How’s the bass tone? Decent. How’s the drumming? It works. Does the bass just follow the guitar? Absolutely. Could the drummer have possibly hit the tom’s less? I doubt it. I really wanted to hear some bass licks in the chorus and just the occasional fill from the drums would have filled me with joy. Instead, I’m filled with more neutrality than a Swiss 5’9 male, wearing a beige t-shirt. Could the rhythm section have done something better? All I know is my gut says maybe. That’s not to say that either of these instruments are bad. Honestly, the bass following the guitar works in the verse and the bridge, I’m just butthurt that they didn’t do any fancy shit in the chorus. And the drummer, whilst not playing many fills, has some sick beats and is tight as fuck. I just really wanted something more technical. So yeah, final verdict: Perth, if you can make more bands like this with some slightly more technical bassists and drummers, my boner would be almighty. Vocals: Screams: Cleans: 9/10 Guitars: 8/10 Bass: he plays notes/10 Drums: 6/10 (would have been 9 at least if there were some fills) Production: 7/10 (points lost for the near inaudible cymbals in the chorus) Lyrics: 6/10 Songwriting: 8/10 Overall IPHYB Rating: 7.5/10

This record takes me back to last summer, Aug 07, me and Drake were in Norfolk, VA, working with Nottz. Kanye's last album had just dropped, and Nottz had the hottest song on that shit at the time. Royce had just been out workin with Nottz the week before us, so all that was being played in Red's car was Barry Bonds and 2 songs that Royce had done with Primo that he had left behind. Me and Drake were spazzing on this shit. Finally... Royce Da 5'9 - Shake This
