Not Over
“Lay him down on the couch and Mad should be able to help him,” Mare said as the group went into what looked like a control room/living room, much like what the Septiceyes had.
“Do I have to? Alice stuff is all sticky.” Mad made a face as Dark placed Jackie on the couch.
“Yes, you have to,” Mare said with a sigh. “We’re far from done with dealing with Alice.”
“She’s dead. We just watched her melt away into a literal puddle.” Anti said as Dark stepped away to allow Mad to sit on the end of the couch, placing his hands on Jackie’s head.
“I don’t like that,” Marvin said to Chase, who moved so he was blocking Marvin’s view of the couch.
“That was one of her clones,” Mare said as he went over to a door on the wall.
“One of her what?” Dark asked. “She makes clones, too?”
“I can make shadow projections that can touch things, she makes perfect replicas of herself. It’s all in the ink.” Mare opened what was shown to be a closet and started digging into it.
“Her clones are assholes,” Phantom muttered, having sat down on the floor. “Although that’s because Alice is an asshole.”
“If she’s such an asshole, why did you let her stay with you guys?” Anti asked.
“Because I made her.” Mare pulled out several blankets, the grunt he let out telling the others that they were more than that. “If you want to get technical about it, she’s Blank’s sister and my daughter.” He added, closing the closet door with his foot and placing the pile of blankets on the ground.
“She’s not my sister.” Blank stated, scrunching up his face.
“She was made first. I was trying to do some spells with ink and well...I summoned a fucked-up angel.” Mare scoffed, picking one of the blankets up and going over to Phantom.
“What spells were you using? What book?” Marvin asked. “Something could have gone wrong and things could have gotten corrupted. We could also use that information to stop her.”
“Maybe.” Mare draped the blanket over Phantom’s shoulders and he slumped down with it. “Weighted blankets, they do wonders,” Mare explained when he got a look from Chase. Blank went over to the pile and pushed some of them off before taking out a blue one. He hugged the blanket and dragged it over to the couch before sitting down in front of it and covering himself with it.
“Robbie would like that,” Chase said to Marvin.
“He would.” Mavin agreed. “Tell me more about this spell.”
Everyone was focused on trying to understand what Marvin and Mare were saying while Mad was still working. His eyes were closed as he dug deeper and deeper into Jackie’s mind, working his way through memories and getting stuck on a strong feeling. Mad could feel the tears forming behind lids as a rush of betrayal hit him like a truck. The true love that was there was being torn apart and Mad could feel every single seam of it being ripped. He formed a projection of his body into Jackie’s mind, swimming towards a soft light source where he eventually found Jackie, well, Jackie’s emotions and he was stuck in an ink trap, the black goop holding him down and not allowing him to move.
“Jackie!” Mad’s inner voice screamed out, finding that he was stuck in ink himself, making it hard to move. “She did so much damage.” He commented to himself, seeing the doubt that covered some of the memories of the Septiceyes and Ipliers. She’d been working on him for a while and dug in deep. Mad knew he couldn't clean it all out, there was too much of a risk of shutting Jackie down completely if he meddled too much with the inky thoughts.
“I don’t get it.” Jackie could be heard thinking. “I thought she...I thought she loved me.” Mad had to pull on a leg to get it to move so he could fumble closer.
“Jackie. Jackie get up.” Mad said, finally making it to the trap but some of the ink started to latch on to him as well.
“I just wanted what Chase and Marvin have. I just want to be happy.” Jackie lifted his head and looked at Mad, dark tears rolling down his cheeks like they had back when he was possessed.
“You can be but you need to get up first.” Mad tugged on the ink that had his arm and he snapped it off, reaching out and grabbing some of the ink that was on Jackie. “You’re stronger than this, I know how your powers work.” Mad could clearly feel that emotions and Jackie’s powers were strongly connected. Seeing how his families being hurt broke the spell as well helped that conclusion. “It’s not going to be easy, the first step is going to be hard and it won’t get easier for a long time, but you need to get up. Wake up.” Mad pulled on the ink and got some of it off. “I know how emotions work, I know how much they can fucking suck sometimes and I also know that you can do this.” Mad crawled up so he was holding on to Jackie, holding the strand of ink that was pressing down on Jackie’s back. “Break it, Jackie. Break it! Break-” There was a strong flash of light and Mad was pushed out of Jackie’s mind, a tear dropped from Mad’s eyes when he opened them and it landed on Jackie’s cheek. Jackie slowly opened his own eyes and there was a long moment of the two just staring at each other, breathing at the same time.
“Jackie’s up!” Chase’s cheer snapped them out of their trance.
“Good job, Mad.” Mare praised, patting Mad on the back while Jackie was helped to his feet.
“Thanks,” Mad said softly, staying on the couch as the others gathered and talked more.
“What’s with that face?” Phantom asked, joining Mad on the couch. “You look like you’re hungry.”
“It’s nothing.” Mad stated.
“Sure, whatever.” Phantom slumped down and got comfortable.
“We should call it a day, we can gather together tomorrow and start working on tracking her,” Chase said.
“I’ll see if Host can get anything, a hint or anything,” Dark said. “There’s usually a good gap of time between prophecies, but maybe we’ll get lucky.”
“I could use a-” Anti stopped and he and Blank both went stiff.
“The control panel!” Blank scrambled up and rushed over to another wall, pressing a hidden panel before jumping back, the wall spinning and revealing a similar set up that the Septiceyes and Ipliers knew.
“Fancy.” JJ signed.
“What’s going on?” Mare rushed over to Blank and saw that their control panel was covered in ink. “We can fix this, it’s-” Mare stopped when a strong scent of something burning filled the air. “It’s gonna blow!”
“Wil!” Dark grabbed Anti and before anything else could happen, everyone was sent outside of the headquarters by a cloud of pink smoke. No one had time to even take a breath before the building in front of them exploded, shards of metal and wood flew around them.
“I’m going to go vomit.” Mad placed a hand over his stomach and he stepped away from the group.
“At least ours was just a fire,” Dark said. “And wasn’t done by one of our own.”
“You’re not helping,” Anti said between almost closed lips.
“Know of any good hotels?” Mare asked, the defeat clear in his voice.
“No, but I know our place is pretty big.” Chase looked at Marvin and got a head nod. “Someone might have to sleep on the couch, but it’s a damn good couch.”
“Better than nothing.” Mare sighed. There was a loud whistling and a large chunk of metal started flying towards where Mad had been leaning against a tree.
“Look out!” Jackie rushed over and caught the metal that was going to hit Mad. Jackie tossed the metal chunk back and sniffed with a smile, his powers were back and fully going. “You good?” He asked, turning towards Mad who just stared at him.
“Yeah.” Mad squeaked out. Why were his cheeks warming up? The fire had died out. “Thanks.”
“We’re going to need to do a lot of jobs to pay this off,” Mare said.
“Let’s get started then.” Chase held out a hand.
“Let’s.” Mare took the hand and shook it.
