Jackal and Dahlia fascinate me as per usual... other day was talking with Charles because I had suddenly gotten really sad Them Thoughts.
The topic was sort of their relationship and what they truly mean to each other. Sure, they both grew up in Westwood and were best friends. I think their friendship probably began and grew from the basis of both being mages and having magic, seeing as they were the only two who actually Got Each Other on a deeper level, being the only mages in the area.
Jackal eventually disappears one night and Dahlia is distraught and frantic, wondering where the hell he could have gone overnight when she had just seen him yesterday. She asks his family, they provide no answers and shoo her away because they are basically the only family in Westwood who hates the Diminished (but they're pleasant so long as you avoid that topic), and they also played a direct hand in his disappearance too. She asks her parents if they know anything, they don't.
Part of me thinks maybe this is when her and Zori either begin to know each other or get much closer. Eventually Dahlia 'moves on', where its more a lingering thought in the back of her head than immediately on her mind.
However in Jackal's case, I think Dahlia is sort of a lifeline for him. He's with strangers who he was willingly given to by his parents. They want to use him. He is just a vessel, a body that can use magic for them. He eventually escapes the group years later, evidently changed both physically and mentally but his first stop is Westwood. Not to see his parents, but to see Dahlia.
As he asks for directions, slowly traveling over to Westwood he keeps hearing rumors or stories of how that area has been abandoned and avoided for years now. He doesn't let it show on his face, but internally he's like, 'What. What the fuck do you mean.' He goes to Westwood only to find it completely obliterated and missing, wondering if Dahlia is dead.
The thought of Dahlia having somewhat 'moved on' while she was always on Jackal's mind and his guiding light in scary, hard times. Kind of hurts. Dahlia doesn't think much about Jackal these days, mostly because her life has been wrought with other things (losing Westwood, losing the lover who helped her pick up the pieces of her life post-13th). Still hurts thinking about the dichotomy of how important they are to each other (or how important they appear to each other).
