The Trump administration treats all undocumented border crossing as a crime, jailing adults and splitting families. The U.N. says that violates the children’s rights.
“United States authorities had separated several hundred children, including toddlers, from their parents or others claiming to be their family members, under a policy of criminally prosecuting undocumented people crossing the border. That practice ‘amounts to arbitrary and unlawful interference in family life, and is a serious violation of the rights of the child. ... The U.S. should immediately halt this practice of separating families and stop criminalizing what should at most be an administrative offense — that of irregular entry or stay in the U.S. ... Children should never be detained for reasons related to their own or their parents’ migration status. Detention is never in the best interests of the child and always constitutes a child rights violation.’”
The Trump administration’s response:
“Fuck off, United Nations. You can’t tell me what to do. And it’s all the Democrats’ fault anyway.” (A lie, of course.)
Fun Fact: The United States is the only country in the entire world that has not ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
