Two days later, I think one of my favourite things about 11x06 is that, while Mickey is going through something really heavy and has moments where you can really see how it’s weighing on him, the episode is also filled with moments where he’s happy. He has a chill breakfast with the family. He’s in a perfectly good mood when he’s talking to Lip about how to work out the bike storage. He’s mildly irritated with Debbie. He has a lot of things going on. 

@damngcoffee​ pointed out to me that Mickey looks stressed out for most of seasons four and five and it’s really true. He has this distinct look and if you look at @mickeygifs​ every-mickey-outfit posts you really see it. He almost always looks like something awful is about to happen -- it’s just constant stress and worry.

can all be the same day. There’s some actual balance in his life.

The satisfaction I felt seeing a helpless terry and knowing how fucking humiliated he must’ve felt needing help from his gay son who he hates just for being who he is and his son’s husband who he also hates by default. Mickey was the bigger person. Ian was the bigger person. Terry is just pathetic and I know he felt that.

I don’t think the show or even Ian was trying to compare trauma or tell Mickey he’s had it worse with his reply to Mickey’s “Frank’s not a homophobic psychopath who tortured you every day for years”, I think he’s awkwardly trying to diffuse the tension and calm Mickey down because Mickey’s clearly not ok -- Ian has been carefully watching how he’s become very consumed with violent/homicidal ideation, and you can see the surprise in Ian’s eyes when Mickey answers “are you OK?” with “yes” in that weird tone of voice. Actually Mickey’s wording there reminds me of stuff Ian’s told him previously--“your dad is an evil psychotic prick”. After Mickey’s like “guess we both had shit dads”, Ian also does the same little laugh that he does in 3x07 when he’s like “thanks to me you got pistol whipped and shot in the ass”. I think he’s hoping that deflecting and distracting Mickey will help and he’s finding it very difficult to know what to say in this moment and that’s very fair.

okay a couple things about 11x06:

so Ian’s thing is to grab Mickey by the back of the head, but this one in particular is special. Ian needs Mickey to know that he means what he says, so he grabs Mickey hard. You can see it in these gifs (thanks to the creator), his fingers are in mickeys neck. He physically holds mickeys head in place so Mickey has no where to look but in Ian’s eyes when he says this, and I think that’s beautiful.

My next things is about earlier in the episode, when terry is dropped back off at the house. Mickey starts listing off those things that he could do to terry since terry can’t really fight back. All of the things he says - scoop his eye out with a spoon, piss on him and let him air dry, use his mouth as an ashtray - all of these examples seem way too specific for Mickey to just think of them off the top of his head. It almost makes me think that maybe he has seen or experienced some of these from when he was growing up with terry. Maybe these were Terry’s go-to’s? And like of course we probably won’t ever know the extent of what terry has done to Mickey and the milkoviches because there’s a time limit on the episodes and because Mickey doesn’t always talk about his feelings, but it does like really make me think
