In Japanese folklore, a shami chōrō is a type of tsukumogami. It is born from a shamisen once played by a master but now abandoned. Sometimes this is because the master has died, but often he has simply moved onto another instrument.

Because of their high value, musical instruments are often kept long after they are no longer used. Many will turn into tsukumogami, forlornly longing to be played again.
