The ringing was piercing, a high-pitched screech that drowned out every sound around him. His vision had gone white, ever so slowly fading back into focus as the deafening ringing solidified into a searing pain, pain which spread from his head to his whole body, his arms, his chest, his abdomen, his legs --

Oh my god, his leg.

As the pain finally registered, Derek started screaming, a hoarse wail torn from his chest, soon swallowed by gunfire. He tried to look down, couldn’t see anything under all of the blood, but part of his leg was definitely not there. Holy fucking shit, his right leg from shin to foot was gone.

“HALE!” 

It was Boyd’s voice. He fired two rounds and dashed towards Derek, keeping low and sliding in the dirt. He pulled Derek a few feet off to behind a makeshift barricade, a few haphazard mounds of earth and wood laid prior to battle for cover. “I’ve got you man, I’ve got you.”

Derek’s chest heaved as he cried out in agony, tears and sweat leaving river streaks through the dirt on his face. He’d lost his helmet in the blast, his own blood matting his hair from where shrapnel had cut his scalp. 

“MEDIC!” Boyd hollered, peering over cover before firing three more rounds from his rifle, ducking back afterward. “It’s gonna be okay, Hale, help is on the way.” The air momentarily lit up with another nearby grenade explosion, and Boyd flinched as he reached down to grab Derek’s hand, met with a squeeze that would surely break a weaker man’s bones.

Boyd’s head whipped around as their medic called his name, and he rose up, without thinking, to identify their position and get Derek help. “Stilinski!”

It was a split second mistake that put a hole straight through his skull. 

“BOYD!”

Stiles hit the ground, army crawling to Derek as he quickly assessed the damage, whipping out a tourniquet to constrict the blood flowing out of his leg. “I gotcha, buddy. We’re gonna get you on the next medevac.”  

“No, no, stop, what are you doing, you have to go help Boyd,” Derek babbled, eyes shifting in and out of focus as his hands grasped at Stiles’ shoulders weakly.

Stiles shook his head sadly. “It’s too late, Derek. But we’re gonna get you out of here. Reinforcements are almost here. We just have to buy a little time.” He grabbed Derek’s hand, squeezing for a moment before returning his attention to Derek’s leg... or lack thereof.

 What felt like an eternity passed in mere minutes as bullets flew. A muffled, crackling voice came in over Stiles’ radio around the same time as the enemy began to advance.

“Shitshitshitshitshit, we gotta go,” Stiles muttered, and Derek groaned in pain as the medic started dragging him as far away from the conflict as he could. Their unit collapsed on their position, giving them just enough cover to make it to the edge of the field where the medevac chopper was landing.

“MEDIC!” 

It came from the distance, back at the battlefield.

The blades of the chopper whirred as help dropped from the open doors to flock around Derek. Stiles nodded, and then turned as if to leave.

“St-Stiles!”

Derek was barely audible above the helicopter, but Stiles turned back anyway. His wounded companion grasped at his hand roughly, eyes pleading. It was enough to make Stiles grimace in guilt. “I have to go, Derek. They need me.”

Derek’s eyes shone as he coughed. “I’m not letting go. You... you promised. Back in basic.”

Steely glares turning to furtive glances and secretive stares, hands feeling blindly in the dark of night, sweat-slicked sheets, a marked collarbone, a gasp of pleasure. Foreheads pressed tightly together as they tried to make sense of it all. "We’ll stick together. Come what may.” 

There was no way to tell him that he had to break his promise. No way to express the memories and emotion other than to lean down and press a brief and chaste kiss to Derek’s forehead. A squeeze of the hand, a slipped tear. Stiles turned back once more. This time, Derek let go. 

Gunshots rang out and hell broke loose, a phalanx approaching the medevac, Stiles shoving the other medics into the chopper and firing his own gun, Derek screaming as the chopper took flight, bullets sparking off the hull as Stiles stood alone against six, desperately buying them time to get enough air to be clear, bullets sparking against the hull, a battle cry barely reaching the chopper, a medic’s final words ringing in Derek’s ear.

“Hoo-rah!”

Hey! Do you have any recommendations for any good fics with Tony/Steve pairing and Peter as their son?

If you haven’t read Deep in the Heart of Me this is my personal favorite SuperFamily fic... dealing with a no-powers AU, this fic covers war-time recovery, PTSD, alcoholism, adopted family, with a side order of WinterHawk.

Truly excellent.
