Shanks is bad at this
a dumb theory

@shankmi:
“–yeah, yeah… you’ve got a lot of history under your belt that you won’t tell me, right?” yukiko understood. not like she was willing to talk about her own complicated experiences either, not that it’d compare to his anyway. but still… that didn’t stop her from being so curious, she won’t pressure him into saying anything but eventually she’d want to talk more because that was just the kind of person she was. yukiko cast her eyes downward towards her book.
her thoughts backtrack, still surprised that she managed to run into him. she would have barely remembered him if it wasn’t for the fact that jeongguk was one of those starred hackers back when they were in school. typically she’d see people like that working for the worst kinds of people but jeongguk? working on the force? what a shocker.
her eyes went between her book to him. her eyes were just trained on him as if she was trying to figure him out but jeongguk was a mystery for her. no, no… she didn’t want to doubt him, she should just try and trust her own instincts, right? she props her elbow on the table, resting her chin on the palm of her hand. “so, you work for the mpd now? i’m sort of surprised. i thought you’d be doing something completely different. but still, that’s admirable…” unlike the scum in this city who’d go around doing atrocious crimes, right?
it's odd, meeting her in the library like this, or maybe it's not; he should expect to find people from his past now that he's returned to the island. he grew up here, after all, and never really left until more recent years. it's only a matter of time until he runs into the wrong ghost. thankfully, yukiko is not that. she's just someone from high school that could've been a friend, under different circumstances-- if he had been different. nowadays, he wishes he was. he has lots of regrets, and he still wishes he never joined phoenix in the first place, but maybe he wouldn't be alive if he hadn't. (sometimes he still regrets that, too: his survival.) he is still searching for redemption. after a mere few months, the police department hasn't given him that yet.
it doesn't stop him from being open about it, though. he sees no reason to be, and in some ways he's proud of his new position, after so long of having to keep secrets. now he's finally living a life worth talking about: a job with the mpd, working toward a degree in programming in university. before everything happened, he dreamed of heading to the mainland and enrolling in one of the sky universities, but phoenix usurped his life, and if he was there, he wouldn't be able to help here, for better or worse.
he nods at her question, and his lips quirk up in the smallest hint of a smile, because he finds humor in her words, though he thinks better than showing it. what something different did she expect from him? if it was dark and despicable, she was probably right. she doesn't know about that, though, and he'll do his best to keep it that way. "studying programming too," he adds, like it's even necessary. he knows most of what he's learning already, but it'll look better if he has an actual degree in it, even if this job with the mpd does end up being long term. "what about you? what have you been up to?"
❛❛ how can you smile in moments like this? ❜❜
a starter : wrong number
when she called the number to pick her up from a recent kill, she doesn’t expect a new face. or maybe she called the wrong number. she’s sure, of course, that she called the right clean-up crew, because it was the same person who answered on the phone every single time, but this driver is new – oh. right. it was the number she found on a card clutched in the dead woman’s hand. she decides to say nothing of it, and go with the flow.
“what? it’s fun.” she doesn’t take off her mask yet, and settles in the dark back seat covered in blood that is entirely not her own. her hands are still trembling from the adrenaline, the excitement of the hunt, and she even laughs a little, covering her mouth with the back of her hand like that’ll muffle the noise in this small space. “i asked for a ride, as per usual, and not your twenty questions or your judgement, thank you.” she looks up then, and places her hands over the driver’s seat, at the driver’s shoulder. she means to spook her a bit. maybe if she asks really vague questions, jinah will know whether to get out of this car quicker than she normally would. “so, what’s your name, honey? you drive around people like me often, or what?”

do you ever want to get married?
grim growled at her, pretty much stared her down. who was she that she dared to ask that kind of question. was she trying to make fun of him? the male mustered her. maybe she knew about his past regarding that topic. maybe she knew how he had offered himself to marry his childhood friend in order to save her from an arranged marriage. maybe she knew how he had been rejected as soon as those words had slipped off his lips. maybe she was even pitying him. but he didn't felt like he was one to pity. she was more of the one to be looked upon with a pained expression, knowing of the fact how grim just had to use a hand to kill her this instant.
no matter how enraged he was about this absurdity and brazenness, it also made him wonder what exact reason she had to ask that question. someone else, a mdp officer had asked just a few days ago, so what was it that made him look like he would think about marriage at all? he had no intention to marry in the near or far future. someone like him wasn't supposed to settle down, he was born to serve, born to fight and born to kill. marriage didn't belonged to that life plan. "mind your own business, shrimpy."

36. is there anyone you want to punch in the face right now?
“jihoon?” is his immediate response, the hint of a smile ghosting across his lips. “it’d only be fair. he knocked me out almost as soon as he met me, i think i deserve a free hit.” the boy pauses, considers it a bit longer, and ultimate sighs. “it’d probably be more trouble than it’s worth. i don’t really make a habit of punching people, i guess it’s better if i just don’t.”

26. have you ever been high?TW: recreational drug use
he glances around nervously, as if he’ll get in trouble for so much as thinking about it. jaein has always been a good kid, always followed the rules, but he hasn’t always had the best influences. one very important influence was somewhat worse than the others. she was the one who blew smoke into his lips, who laughed and teased him until he joined her up in the clouds. it hadn’t been pleasant, being so removed from himself. “once. it was just marijuana.” he finally admits in a hushed voice. the laws on drug use are quite strict and a good boy has a fear of being caught. “it wasn’t fun. i don’t think i’d ever do it again.”

5. what kind of people are you attracted to?
“I’m not sure but I want a guy who loves and accepts me for me.” She pauses in thought. “I want someone that’s willing to love and accept who I was, who I am and who I am yet to become.” Hani chuckles and waves her hand, taking a brief pause as she then later continues to speak.
“But we’re talking about attraction here. I like tall guys with nice smiles. I find guys who embody nontoxic masculinity as a trait. It’s great to have someone actually be open to seeing the world in a different point of view than their own or what they’re supposed to see. I think guys who can cook are attractive. As long as they have a pleasing personality and just a hint of humor in their body, I’d find them charming.” Was there more to it? Hani began to think. She’s dated guys for money and got engaged to a man for the sake of having a better life so she thinks things through.
“A man who knows how to own up to his mistakes, apologize for it and thank someone even for the little things. These are often overlooked as most people are just down to go with the most attractive person in their eyes. I guess I believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Only those who look thoroughly can see the real beauty.”
