Claire watches Asian dramas - drowning in a rich drama

I finished watching The Story of Minglan (2018) this week. It’s good, but a bit long. (73 episodes!) 

In one sentence, this drama is a lot like wonderful chocolate cake with chocolate icing and bits of semisweet chocolate sprinkled across the top. It’s really engaging, and the sets, costumes, cultural and historical ambiance bring you right into another world. The acting is good overall, and the main characters are likeable and attractive; even most of the side characters are fun to watch.

But like that chocolate cake, it’s so rich that after a while you start getting full. And the drama amps up. And you want to stop and digest, but you just have to take one more bite...and one more...and well heck, you’re almost done now, may as well take those last two bites...And then you have a bit of a stomach ache because you ate too fast, and the cake is all gone and there’s cake crumbs and icing all over the counter. 

The ending was satisfying, but it took a little too long to get there. I also wanted to see a little more agency out of the lead female character in the climax of the show, since she’s been set up throughout the series as a very capable and creative person.

Worth watching? Sure! Just be prepared for the length and complexity (lots of characters to keep track of), and maybe set a schedule for yourself. 

I think I overdid it, and then was just pushing to finish it for the last 10 or so episodes so I could be done. I also thought that episode 70 was the last episode, so I was really flummoxed trying to figure out how they could resolve all the hanging plot points as we got to the mid-way point of that episode!
