Conscious acts of Aloha
Aloha Tumblr,
Maybe you follow me on Instagram. If so you might have seen the newest project I’ve been working on called Doggies and Hotties. We partner with dog foster homes and take pictures with puppers in need of forever families (maybe we’re muscled and shirtless in these pics) and then post the photos on social media. Baby the black lab found a forever home today and that has really brightened my heart. I’m glad that we used gym time and Doggies and Hotties and social media influence to connect people with an animal companion in a meaningful way.
On the subject of doing something meaningful I continue to think about something I posted earlier which is how do I help the homeless around my area. I work in Waikiki which is notorious for homelessness and I see people every day who have stories and lives that go unnoticed and that doesn’t sit right with me. Especially in a location that kind of boasts of excess. I by no means think anyway owes or is obligated to give anyone else their resources, money, etc.
I found myself wanting to though. When I think about my closet and drawers of clothes I have so much excess. Things that are too big for me now (I’ve lost like 60 lbs over the years) or apparel I just don’t wear. Yesterday I put together three bags of maybe 40-50 items total and went out into Waikiki on my lunch break today to give these items to people who will actually use them. Shaking hands with the people I got to help and seeing the impact of what a few new shirts or a pair of pants can make has altered my perception of donation. I think from now on I will always try and give directly to people I see rather than donate to a center. It reinforces the idea that the less you have the more precious each thing becomes.
My closet of excess was able to satisfy a few people’s needs today and I like that.
