An Afterthought, No More Haaland and Davids Make it Unacceptable to Short-Shrift Indian Country
“Like our ancestors, those of us who crave the Indigenous narrative must forage for this sustenance of our media diets — hunt for it in digital territories like Facebook and Twitter to nourish our minds. This has to change, and Haaland and Davids are emblematic of this call to action.”

Debra Anne Haaland is an #American politician serving as the U.S. Representative from New Mexico's 1st congressional district. Shes a former leader of the Democratic Party of #NewMexico. She and #ShariceDavids are the first two Native American women elected to the U.S. Congress. Shes a member of the #LagunaPueblo tribe. Her mom, a #NativeAmerican, served in the #USNavy. Her father, a #Norwegian American, was an officer in the #USMarineCorps and recipient of the Silver Star for his actions in Vietnam; he was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in 2005. Both of her parents are registered Republicans but her mother changed to a Democrat to vote/support her in 2012. “I feel Native issues are more aligned with the Democratic Party. Native Americans value clean water, clean air, we don’t want to desecrate sacred sites. We care about people and we help each other. To me those values are more in line with Democratic values. I’ve gained support across the state from the Pueblos. I’ve been endorsed by a dozen Pueblo tribes, including the 10 Southern Pueblo Governors. There are rarely any women who are in pueblo governments and I don’t have an issue with that at all. The Apache, the Navajo and other tribes are very supportive and are excited for me.” She earned her B.A. in English from the University of New Mexico in 1994. She earned her Juris Doctor in Indian law from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2006. In 2012, she served as the state's vote director for Native Americans in #BarackObama's 2012 reelection campaign. She was elected a 2 year term as the Chair of the Democratic Party of NM in 2015. She announced her run for the US House of Representatives in the NM 1st congressional district in the 2018 elections. Haaland wore a traditional Pueblo dress, necklace and boots to the swearing-in ceremony on January 3, 2019. On March 7, 2019, during a debate on voting rights and campaign finance, she became the first Native woman to preside over the US House of Representatives. 🇺🇸🇳🇴⚖️ #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #mixedgirls #followfriday https://www.instagram.com/p/B5MCkx9Fn7z/?igshid=ezhlwjefzw5l

New Congress, New (Green) Deal: the 116th Congress could be one for the ages. More women of color are represented than ever before and they could make a legislative impact not felt in over two decades. #AlexandriaOcasioCortez #AyannaPressley #IlhanOmar #ShariceDavids #DebHaaland https://www.instagram.com/p/BsKPnP5Asqx/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1viq1iwvo9d1v
