how do u design your original characters? I really loved Olympia's son's design because he looked like her but also seemed like his own person!! I want to design fankids like you do
hmm ssorry i had to think anout this question a little. its a very good one. in terms of fankids: i always find it bestt to start with the character itself. find some key themes and from there figure out just how much of the likeness of their parent(s or siblings) you’d like to capture. :)
Raolph for example is an oc i made to be Skyla’s brother. ii found early on i wanted him to value family and so that made me feel it was more compelling to capture that in his design by making him and skyla look very similar apart from some coloring/shape language…
by referencing the official art/models for characters, i can pull shapes i see in the eyes and hair and flavor them. in raolph’s case, his hair was cut and i gave him earrings to allude to his sister’s hairclip/tie
for characters like taro, olympia’s son, i wanted him to be very different than his mom. his aesthetic is completely different, and i wanted to convey that he’s not a psychic like his mom which is important to me as his character.
so i changed his hair color and drooped his hair over rather than pull it our his face likke his mom. funny enough though, even his asymmetrical hair is supposed to convey that he’s still growing :) if his hair was held up like his mothers, you can actually see a shape movement beginning to look like olympia’s. but its cut up and off center, just like he is
