Part of the memorabilia on display at the Natal Sharks Board Museum is a clipping celebrating the slaughter of "raggy tooth sharks". The sand tiger shark (also known as ragged tooth / grey nurse shark) is one of the species most drastically affected by shark nets. This animal poses no threat to humans, but like many other non-target animals, is indiscriminately killed in the nets. Often found dwelling in or near caves, these slow-moving sharks made easy targets for would-be "heroes", showing off their "deadly" trophies when they returned to shore. Illegal fishing and shark cull gear compete for first place in the threat to the existence of these endangered animals both in Australian and South African waters.
