Can you give me some basics on how to sell clothes and such online? What's a good site or is ebay the best? thank you thank you thank you btw
Okay so I’ve sold clothes on Ebay before and honestly it’s a pain in the ass but here we go.
First things first: wash all of the clothes you plan on selling (duh) bc if they’ve been sitting in your closet for awhile they probably smell like closet
Ebay will ask you to sign up (you have to be 18, or just lie and you have to have a Paypal account). Agree to all of the terms and conditions and blah blah blah. Basically you’re saying that both eBay and Paypal get a cut of whatever you sell.
Then you list your item. Check out similar items when you go to set a price to see what it’s selling for. Most of the time, shirts go for $5-$15, pants for $10-$20 and shoes it honestly just depends on the brand/quality. Make sure you pick the right quality (new, unopened/new, opened/used/etc.). Also make sure you put the listing in the right category (i.e. women’s clothing). Make sure you add the brand, size, fabric, washing instructions and really clear pictures on the front, back, and any decals or anything on the clothes.
Okay the really big downside for me when I was selling clothes on eBay was the fact that you don’t get paid until the buyer receives the item. This was a huge pain for me because I’m constantly broke, and I had to pay for the shipping before I got the money for the clothes. So you get reimbursed but only after so make sure you have enough money to pay for the shipping.
After you list the item, people will bid, it usually lasts a few days until someone wins. You can set a minimum price (so people have to start bidding at x amount of dollars) and you can set a ‘buy it now’ price (you can set a price so people can pay a little extra, to avoid bidding altogether).
I would get a binder or notebook and print pictures of the clothes, listing, keep track of bidders, prices, shipping costs, addresses etc. because if you’re selling a lot of stuff, it gets confusing/overwhelming fast.
So selling on eBay was honestly a nightmare for me, but probably because I was so unorganized/unaware of the policies so it might work for you. For me, the bidding was annoying. 2 sites that I’ve heard good things about but haven’t tried are Poshmark and Thredup. Poshmark is a bit more hip, however they kepe 20% of what you sell, and Thredup is nice because they buy the clothes from you, and then sell to the general public. However, Thredup has brand requirements (they only take x amount of items from certain brands) *and* it’s a little bit mom-ier.
That being said, good luck! Worst case scenario you can always take your stuff to Plato’s Closet or Revolve Clothing Exchange (I’ve had good experiences at Revolve; not so much at Plato’s).
For some reason I can’t answer this privately (wtf tumblr) so I’m tagging you
