Absolutely floored by the subtle thing in broadchurch where the lawyers both have last names that are pieces on a chess board and the characters have personalities reflecting the pieces’ moves and roles
This show is different I fucking swear
Every shot immediately after the Not Guilty verdict is read out, in order.
The intentional choice to leave Joe’s reaction till last (the next scene is him turning to look at Ellie before leaving the dark) highlights who Broadchurch wants to focus on. The verdict “literally” affects Joe the most, but the larger psychological impact is on those who watch him go free, and know that justice was not served. shooting close-up also emphasizes their facial reactions.
(and the only one who’s really happy about it is abby, because she is indeed The Worst.)

sharon & abby vs. sharon & jocelyn - emphasizes closeness vs. creates extra separation - seamless mergers to reflection vs. reflections fracturing each person into two separate wholes - magnifies each person’s size, taking up full vertical length of frame vs. camera pulled away, making them small and distant - precisely centered and framed, harmonious symmetry vs. symmetry slightly off kilter, architectural lines fragmented, reflections blurred - an amicable working partnership with a clear goal in mind vs. two people struggling to map their complex and emotional relationship with each other - enemies? competitors? mentors? respect or disdain? fighting for justice or accepting that the system is broken?
