Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn - A Rant/Review
It’s almost half past one in the morning here. It’s hot and I’m sweaty. But despite everything, I’m feeling very much contented. I just finished Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, and boy oh boy.
The part till Read More is spoiler-free.
The story starts with Camille Preaker, a cub reporter in her early 30’s being sent back into her hometown to investigate a murder. There she reiterates her somewhat totally, UTTERLY disturbed relationship with her mother, whilst getting acquainted to her 13-year-old half sister.
I’ll start with the rant. It was one crazy book. I really didn’t guess a lot throughout the read, but it really did leave me TOTALLY baffled. Though this book is character-driven, none of the characters had any impact on me. I always take a little bit from every book I read, from every woman who graces the book. In this novel though, there was no woman who could do that for me. And it’s kinda shocking since the book revolves around two or three women and their interrelationship, and whatever comes out of it.
I liked the plot development. As a rookie author then, Flynn definitely did a good job. She had a strong plot in her hands, a plot she could’ve further masterminded into something more thrilling. I’m not saying the book is bad, it’s good, VERY good. But, it lacked something. I really don’t know if there’s a word for it other than ‘spark’. If this book were a person and I had dated them, I think I’d break up in 3 or 4 months. I’d like them as a person, but I wouldn’t see a future with them.
This book is a definite 3.7 out of 5 stars. It’s not so great, but not so average either. This book did thrill me at parts, but you know when there are a little over 100 pages in a thriller novel and things are going at such a fast and exhilarating pace that you stay up late to devour it? This book had that missing.
Now, click Read More for spoilers in case you’ve read the book already and were just looking for likeness in opinion-
OKAY. OH MY FUCKING GOD. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?
Can you believe Amma was the murderer? Like, I know many of y’all who’re reading this part of the rant had figured it out. I HADN’T. I really thought it’s the mother, and I found satisfaction in that. What’s more fucking amazing is, it was the mother too. It was both the mother and the sister. Just in different scenarios. It’s a crime thriller novel WITH TWO DIFFERENT MURDERERS, who ARE NOT accomplices, and both of whom have influenced each other in the murder.
Okay but, I may be able to forgive Adora. Like, I know that woman is fucked up to hate her own child. To say that she wished Marion was alive and not Camille, despite having killed her own child HERSELF was such a BIG hypocrisy. “I couldn’t stop myself”, of course you couldn’t. And yes, I am aware that she may have MBP (Munchausen by Proxy). But, to target your very own child to get all that attention, it doesn’t sit right with me. Thank God she never cared for Camille that much, thank God.
My favourite character has to be Alan. Just there, doing nothing, saying stupid but kinda important stuff. Very dense though, too dense.
Amma though, deserves to be forgiven. That girl had a disturbed mother, was poisoned sick to bed mostly, and had this crazy drive for attention that I cannot explain. She’s just had bad things happen to her out of misfortune.
Camille too, was quite a mess. The reason probably why she never harmed others is how much she took herself. It was rather sad, what happened with Camille. Richard sort of pisses me off. John was sweet, but it’d have been wrong. And they all seem to inherit something from Joya. Like, who strips her daughter naked and licks her?
