Taste: Bubbly on the mouth, smooth fruity wash leading to a very light malt finish. A middling affair really, they could do with dropping the “exceptional” as it only raises epectations. I’d take it before most other big brewery wares though.
Pour: Clear amber with a finger of froth reducing to skim
Taste: Crisp and fresh beer but lacking in real flavour. There’s a slight fruitiness with undertones of citrus but no distinguisable bite or aftertaste. No great shake’s this, certainly not exceptional. Sharp’s is a Cornish brewery founded in 1994 and taken over in 2011 by Molson Coors. I wonder what this tasted like before the big brand takeover?
Our friends at Sharp’s Brewery - a modern brewery located in the lush surrounds of Rock, Cornwall - invited us down to their neck of the woods for a tour of their HQ, and to oversee the first stage of the brewing of their special Citadel ale.

In their ‘pilot brewery’ - a space dedicated to product development and experimentation (and rather smaller than their sprawling ‘big brewery’) the process began. Grains were mixed with warm water in a mash tun, then were left to sit for an hour to stew.
Once the enzymes in the malt convert the starch to sugar, the liquid is drained off, the mixture is moved into the kettle to boil. At this point we added citra and orange peel to give our Citadel ale - a Saison - its refreshing taste, then left it for 8 hours, after which it’d be moved to a fermentation tank for the final stage.
Unfortunately we couldn’t stick around in Rock for five more days to see the Citadel Saison in its final form, but we did take a tour of the Sharps’ big brewery. Producing a whopping million pints a week, this is where Sharps favourites such as Doom Bar - the brewery’s calling card and currently the No. 1 cask ale in the UK - are born.
The passion Sharps bring to their craft is undeniable, and the hard work clear to see in every corner of the buzzing brewery. We loved having a peek into their world, and can’t wait for them to return to Citadel and bring The Temple of Doom(Bar) to Gunnersbury Park.
