Shawn Phillips – Second Contribution
Shawn Phillips – Second Contribution
Vinyl, LP, Album, Stereo, Terre Haute Press
This past weekend I was fortunate enough to score a copy of Second Contribution by Shawn Phillips for Three Dollars and change at the Record Jungle in Montebello, CA. My copy of the record is the Terre Haute Pressing - which is a very good stamper of this record. It sounds amazing on my sound system.
Shawn Phillips is a 1960s and 1970s Folk-rock musician who was a member of Donovan’s band. He was born in 1943 and lives in the Fort Worth,Texas.
Second Contribution is very much a timepiece of the hippy, free-love period of the 1970s. I would describe the album as being mellow, earthy, soft Folk Rock with tinges of Psychedelia.
Second Contribution features nice production, psychedelic keyboards and horns in a few places. The album even gets a little funky on one or two songs.
Although Side A is good, the really magic on this record happens on Side B. My favorites on the B-Side of Second Contribution include; Lookin’ up lookin’ Down, Remedial Interruption, Whaz’ Zat, Schmaltz Waltz (a lush, David Axelrod style song), F Sharp Splendor and finally Steel Eyes.
