I have to keep my make up fasts which i skipped beacause of mensturation. Should i keep shawal fasts before those or after those fasts?
As salaamu alaykum!Theres difference of opinion on the matter, Some of the scholars mention that it’s more important to fast the missed fasts of Ramadan before the fasts of shawwal because the Hadith states ‘Whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six days of Shawwaal…’ emphasis on the ‘then follows’. By that they say that it’s required of you to finish the missed fasts first, they may fast the 6 days of shawwal fasts in the next Islamic month if they desire, and in sha Allaah they will be rewarded as if they fasted the whole year ( as stated in the Hadith)
The other opinion is the opposite, Shaykh Badr Ibn Ali حفظه الله mentioned that it’s upon you to fast the shawwaal fasts first because it’s been specified to being completed by specific time frame (within the month of shawwaal), and catching up on the Ramadan fasts should be done at a later stage but before the next Ramadan. I follow the latter opinion because its something our teachers have taught us aswell, plus the example I often think of is of the women who are /were in the process of childbirth who may have missed all the fasts of Ramadan, yet are clear to fast in shawwaal so they should be given the chance to attain the reward of fasting the whole year, because their missed fasts of Ramadan are excused through valid reasoning plus the fasts of shawwal are restricted to shawwaal and the need to make up the missed fasts of Ramadan are left unrestricted.
And Allaah knows best.
Missing Ramadan....
“Whoever fasts Ramadan, and then six days after Eid, it is [like fasting] an entire year. Whoever does a good deed shall have ten times its reward.”
[Ibn Majah, Muntaqa]
