OKAY NOW I CAN YAP ABOUT CHAPTER 5

Okay. WOW. Holy shit this chapter was freaking good. I need to ramble about it for a hot minute.
First off, the music?? Oh my gosh the music. It’s SO good. I love the new battle theme especially! And the backgrounds!!! If you’re playing the switch version and you didn’t already turn on dynamic backgrounds, DO IT.
MY SUSELLE HEART IS FULLLLL. Oh my gosh they were so cute during the festival. HELLO? THE LAKE SCENE??? LOVE WINSSSS
And speaking of love, something we all guess is actually confirmed: Dessriel is REAL. Man oh MAN is it gonna hurt if and when Asriel appears, considering she likely disappeared when they were the Fun Gang’s age. Seeing his letters made my heart hurt so bad. Azzy can not catch any breaks.
AND FUCK. Nicecream/Pizzapants shippers, we lost. The ship is NOT CANON in Deltarune. I felt SO BAD when Pizzapants went off on him for pretending to be Pizzerina. Poor rabbit guy. At least we still have crumbs of them in Undertale…
But then. I actually shouted “NO” when Noelle got the call that her father fell down. Undertale players, if you know you fucking know. My heart dropped. And of course, seeing Kris make another fountain…
The new dark world is so pretty!!! I adore the throwback to the Field of Hopes and Dreams so much. That was my favorite music from chapter 1 and it’s really great that it made a comeback! I ADORED the throwback theme. I know a lot of people are mixed about it and are annoyed that so much of it was callbacks to Undertale and Deltarune CH1, but I loved it. It felt like going down memory lane again considering that I haven’t replayed Undertale in years. I’ll be honest, I had to laugh when Flowery popped up. Toby really saw everyone theorizing about Flowey making a comeback. And the anime cutscene! I knew from the trailer that it would be more Japanese-themed, but I did not expect a wholeass animated part! I figured he was a little sus when Ralsei started being a little hater towards him, but it was so amusing. And we got Chapter 1 Ralsei for a little bit! Pretty fitting for the nostalgia it’s trying to drum up for Asgore. I was pretty annoyed when Flowery posed himself as Asgore’s “best friend”. I know he was trying to make him forget about Rudy, but considering he also kind of shrugged off mentions of Asgore’s actual family, it makes me wonder how he actually feels about all of them.
And SUSIE WEARING RIBBONS! FINALLY! She was cute for the five seconds before she wore it like an armband. I have SO many ribbons in my inventory too, so that was a relief lmao.
The new watering can mechanic was really fun. AND ACTUAL PLATFORMING?! I literally said out loud, “Castlevania!”
And speaking of, I LOVE the personifications of Ashore’s wedding bouquet flowers. I laughed when Yellow popped up, considering Undertale Yellow (he makes the family guy death pose. PLEASE). I thoroughly enjoyed picking out references to Undertale (like Purple/Seth having the cloudy glasses and torn notebook). Deadass this was me:
And oh. My heart ached when Asgore came out in his armor and yelled at Kris to leave. I know Kris likely doesn’t have the best of feelings towards him, but it hurts when your parents yell at you, even as a teenager. It did kind of confirm one of my theories about him - that he was set up to fail, given we now know he knows about the dark fountains (and he was revealed to have a black shard in CH4).
AND RALSEI USES FIRE HOLY SHIT. I was NOT expecting to see Dreemurr fire magic!!!
Adding onto the flower part, OH MY GOSH I LOVE THEM. Blue and Yellow are SO cute. Aqua’s miniboss fight was really annoying (seriously, it took me like 3 tries), but their dynamic with Purple is really fun.
Blue and Yellow’s fight has an ACE ATTORNEY REFERENCE HOLY SHIT. Kris wears either Edgeworth’s or Franziska’s outfits, Susie wears Gumshoe’s, and Ralsei wears Trucy’s!
And GREEN! GREEN IS SO CUTE. Easily my favorite flower. They are SO SWEET. They heal you several times through the game, and they give you your items back if you fail the final fight against the flowers!
And y’know, I was originally kind of sour on Flowery but (pardon the pun) he kinda grew on me. His boss fight is FUCKING AWFUL (since I suck at dodging) but I liked the “power of friendship” thing he and the other flowers had going for them. Saying goodbye to everyone genuinely hurt considering we’ll probably never see them again. I was crying by the time we had to go seal the fountain. I never expected to cry for Flowery’s death after I spent half the chapter (mostly jokingly) hating on him.
AND THEN THE FUCKING KNIGHT INTERCEPT. I was YELLING NO that whole time. Clearly the Knight is kidnapping Boss Monsters - and if my theories are right, shit is gonna hit the fan VERY quick.
That whole ending with Susie was SO SAD WTF. As soon as Kris got the code for the shelter I KNEW they were gonna try to get rid of it, luckily we got a Susie intercept there. And… 09/15/199X, hm? VEEEEEERY FUCKING INTERESTING TOBIAS FOX
Ugh. Seeing her ask you to “walk her home” and we have to bring her straight to Castle Town… considering she was a bit weird when Toriel came up at the beginning of the chapter (and considering Toriel herself mentioned she said something strange to her while she was drunk)… Tori what the fuck did you say to that girl?
Oh well. Seeing her get such a warm welcome (and seeing her asleep in her bed, oh my heart) got me tearing up again.
Just— AUGH. I know it was a little light on the lore compared to chapters 3 and 4, but I really, really enjoyed it. I loved the callbacks, I loved the antagonists, I loved the new mechanics - I LOVE IT. (Except the boss fights. I suck at dodging, that’s a skill issue.)

Holy shit did Toby commit to the bit with this chapter. If you haven’t played it yet and you thought chapter 4 was bad… oh brother. This chapter is fucking terrifying.
Can’t wait for chapter 6 and chapter 7!
