Back when I was trying to make it as a designer in Cape Town, I was briefed by mate Ronnie to design a big wall hanging for his restaurant ‘New York Style Pizza’. The pizzas were delicious and they tasted just like the New York Subway.

The prompt was to choose the most iconic parts of New York and put them together in a kind of pastiche with incredible kerning.

As you can see, I nailed it on the first go. Ronnie was ecstatic. He said it was the most New York thing he had ever seen. You bet he loved the kerning. He gave me a lolly to make me jolly.

I have dabbled with product design in the past, and I hope to do so in the future. Maybe with some meat products. Maybe some kind of lamb? Who knows. 

This is a juicebox I designed for Del Monte, the world’s leading supplier of grape juice in juicebox form. I knew I had to get it right first go, because I knew that target audience was children and man, children are harshest critics of design.

So right off the bat I went for some green grapes. I know its weird, because all grapes are purple, but kids love green and you have to give them what they want. 

I threw in a few purple grapes too, to make the client happy but Im all about the green here. The kerning on these grapes is unbelievable too. Can you see the way they just kern there? The letting is pretty good too. Yoh, what a lekker ride this was. Lekker like a cracker.

Here is a lockup I designed for a South African e-tailer. 

I always advocate for efficient design. If you are designing on a beautiful colour, you want to take up as little space as possible. Thats why all my logos and all my lockups have the letters as close together as possible.

Have you earned of kerning? I’m the fucking king of kerning.
