This happens to me so often I thought it deserved a stand-up diary. After I do a set, a lady or a gentleman will come up to me and say "usually I don't find women funny, but I thought you were great". It was meant to be taken as a compliment, and I try to look at it in a way that when you are a good female comic, it makes you stand out. If you see a comedy show with 5 guys and 1 woman, and the woman doesn't do well, it has more of an impact as it's 100% of the women on the show. If there were 5 ladies on a show and one doesn't do well, it wouldn't stick out. The more ladies in comedy the better the pool of women in comedy. The Shedot festival here in Toronto was selling out, and these incidents will die away!
There are nice things about me on the internet!
As I've been incessantly mentioning across all social media
I'm in my first comedy festival.
It started today, but my shows are Friday and Saturday. I did swing by after work this evening to check in, pick up my lanyard, help assemble and alphabetize the remaining lanyards rather than overcome my nervousness in talking to other people...
As I said, it's my first festival. I feel like the wise thing to do on a night I'm not performing would be to either support the opening shows, or go pick up a set somewhere else.
I got a bit spooked at the concept of comedy-ing myself out, though, and haven't felt very into that idea. Making sure I get enough rest and self-care seems like the better choice, personally. I went out and did sets I was happy with on Sunday and Tuesday - leaving Monday for laundry and Wednesday for sleeping before 11 (unheard of!).
Tonight, I'm sitting in my room listening to multiple versions of Holst's Planets on youtube, and singing Jupiter in dolphin noises. Sometimes underwater-opera-voice, when the dolphin starts to tire out my throat.
What I'm saying is that I'm a professional and I've totally got this.
AHHHHHH this starts tomorrow!
