Assessment of JTTW 1996 so far (on ep8) it’s really really fun to watch! Monkey has such good energy and bounces off everyone else really well! (sometimes literally) He’s not an edgelord or too annoying, and he has a lot of the mischievous and egotistical personality that makes him so fun.
Although… I can’t help but feel that this version of him is way too nice. The show seems to shoot itself in the foot sometimes regarding the themes or plot of the novel. Like they removed the whole bit about Monkey trying to go back on his word so giving him the fillet seems really cruel and unwarranted. I do think this version of Monkey is really great, I mean obviously you want to root for him! But if he’s too lovable, then the whole journey seems kinda pointless? Like him and Baije’s presence seems a little unjustified because they weren’t killing and eating people before this. It just makes Tang Sanzang look weirdly mean. Also poor Sha Wujing and Bai Longma! They barely got any backstory at all! They weren’t even conscripted to come along!
I don’t know though. Despite some of the show’s plot changes bothering me a bit, I’m still having fun even with the stuff I disagree with.
Also at how adorable baby Monkey is ^^
