Anyone have that weird exchange with certain Christian relatives or friends or whatever, where you start to make an observation about a widespread practice or belief, and then they try to say “well you only know about YOUR experience, you’ve never gone to other churches or denominations or X Y and Z!”

And it’s like.... dude, am I holding you to the same standard when you make observations about other groups? Am I saying “oh well you can’t say that this is a thing because you haven’t heard the Maoists’ perspective on this!” whenever you make an observation about leftists? Am I saying “oh well you’ve never been on other volleyball teams across the US so you can’t make observations about US high school volleyball!”? No? I’m not?

I don’t know, I’ll probably make up better words for this later, but my point is that I shouldn’t have to waste my time doing a study by hand to figure out if there’s various patterns within American Christianity. I can just say “hey this is a pattern I’ve observed to an extent where I can confidently say it’s not an uncommon thing”
