I spent some time SHEET MULCHING today! What is sheet mulching you say? It is a simple and effective way to add nutrients to your soil, as well as feeding your local worm, insect and microbe 🦠population. Over time, cool mushrooms and mycorrhizae fungi will show up and REALLY give you some benefits! Sheet mulching also holds water in the soil which is important for desert and drought like climates. So how do you create sheet mulch? It’s very simple. I like to think simplicity is key 🔑 Simplicity is a great way to start out permaculture projects because most of these things you’ll have on hand already. What I used today: 📦 cardboard boxes 🍂 fallen leaves 🌳 wood chips from a tree recently removed To make the sheet mulch, all you have to do is put down a layer of cardboard, cover with a thick layer of leaves, and top it with a thick layer of wood chips. That’s it! Over time, you can add more layers. Here’s some other materials you can use for sheet mulch: 🌾 grass clippings 🌾 straw (hay contains seeds, so try to stay away from that!) 🍌 food scraps (I recommend using these on the layers at the bottom) 💩 compost 💩 manure (chicken or rabbit I feel are best, though we’ve used horse manure once and it wasn’t too bad...) 📰 newspaper (not the colored, glossy ad pages!) I hope this post was informative to you! I had fun today raking leaves and smelling the autumn smell all over them. I even met some lichen friends and grasshoppers and chickadees!
