Elisa had returned to town for her parents funeral and Elena had cut Matt off. She’d distanced herself completely. Elisa and Matt had found a sort of comfort which was more or less physical in nature. She knew that he was still madly in love with her sister and that it had been nothing more than sex. They both agreed never to mention it to Elena.

Elisa’s always encouraged him to do anything that he pleases and has repeatedly been a source of hope in his life. No matter what their connection, she has insisted repeatedly that he is smarter than everyone gives him credit for. She’s been known to call when things are rough for a friendly pep talk and to let him vent his frustrations.

After Jenna’s death, they fell into the familiar comfort of the past, and began to have something of a secretive affair. Elisa was generally very careful. But, when a condom broke, she became pregnant. They discussed it and she was the one to suggest that she have an abortion because he was far too young to be anyone’s father.

After Elena’s transition to a vampire, Matt felt intense guilt for having been saved, and Elena having died to save his life. Elisa helped him come to terms with the fact that it had been Elena’s choice and that he could’ve done nothing to stop her. They shared a moment afterward and he kissed her. Though, she didn’t want to address it.
