simon not having been on birth control Ever. when he was younger, his cult-indoctrinated mother wouldn’t allow it; now, he’s too uncomfortable to ask his doctor for it because he thinks they’d think he’s a whore (thank you, cult programming that he hasn’t quite undone yet). he isn’t really having sex anyways (again, still hasn’t undone that programming) so it’s fine, he doesn’t need it. and then he starts having sex with grace. frequently.

grace floats the idea of sex without condoms and simon agrees enthusiastically. he doesn’t really think about how bad of an idea it is until after the first few times they do it — he was just excited about the idea of sex with no barriers between them. at first, he tries to figure out how to come clean, but when he thinks concretely about the fact that this could very well end up with him pregnant, he’s not exactly opposed. quite the opposite, actually. growing up in a cult, he’d expected to be married with kids by his age, and he’s never met anyone he might want that with before grace. he knows grace doesn’t think he wants kids, but if simon gets pregnant, wouldn’t he? wouldn’t he want to get married and have a few more? he’d make such a good dad, simon thinks.

it takes a few months for it to happen, but it does. simon knows he’s pregnant pretty early on and hides it; he wants to be as far along as possible by the time grace finds out. he feels bad about keeping a secret from him, but it’s for grace’s own good. this way, they won’t even have to argue about an abortion — he won’t be able to get one by the time grace realizes.

he doesn’t succeed. grace realizes that the few extra pounds in simon’s stomach are suspicious around the end of simon’s first trimester and makes him take a pregnancy test in front of him. simon manages to seem shocked enough that grace has no idea he knew. grace takes simon to his first ultrasound to figure out how far along he is and simon almost cries at the sight of their baby, squeezing grace’s hand the whole time. grace is unreadable.

(internally, grace is realizing from simon’s expression that there’s no way he’ll convince him to terminate. if he tries, simon might hate him, and he can’t have that. and if simon is having his baby, he’ll have to at least support him through the pregnancy and help him pay for baby things, because otherwise he’d be a shitty deadbeat dad. but is ‘deadbeat dad’ worse than ‘college professor who knocked up his student’? god, what the fuck did he get himself into here??)

((a deeper, more animalistic part of grace stares at that ultrasound with a twisted sort of pride. that night, simon sleeps over and grace should resist, he shouldn’t keep doing this, but he doesn’t. he could never resist simon. while grace fucks him, simon grabs his hands and puts them on the swell of his tummy and fuck, grace knows he won’t leave him, he’ll make it work.))

i’m not in this situation, just asking because i am a disabled person in disability activism spaces online and i am curious.

there is a lot of talk of eugenics, and i believe that eugenics are inherently bad and that eugenics are an issue for the disabled community. however i am also fully pro-choice for abortions, so if someone has a genetic disability and knows their child would be likely to have their disability, and they don’t want to put their child through that, so they get an abortion, is this ableist or eugenics?

It always matters the intent of the person.

Whenever it comes to just not wanting to have a child that can have a disability, and the person carrying the pregnancy gets an abortion for reasons such as them believing they don't want their child to struggle, they don't have the means to provide for a disabled child, or they simply don't want a child in general, that isn't ableism or eugenics.

If the pregnancy is terminated simply for the fact they do not think a disabled child has rights to live and/or think there should be less disabled people in the world, that falls into ableism and eugenics.

In the end, no one can control who gets an abortion, and no one should, though reasoning can still make one ableist or not.

It is a high-point of toxic individualism to look at the many ableist barriers in this society and insist that the only real solution to this society being hostile to disability should be aiming to somehow fully cure or eugenically abort individual disabled people.
