Zed is like a repressed homo in that he thinks he doesn’t deserve/get to be happy and that Shen is unattainable/he doesn’t deserve Shen. Zed also has an insane complex about wanting everything Shen has had due to the complete fuck up names Kusho and how he raised them. Wanting Yevnai not because he loves her but because he works to have what Shen is freely given. (Yevnai I’m not doing you dirty it’s Riots fault I’m so happy you get to be frisky with your Vestayan boytoy)
Shen is a bi king who believes his responsibilities as the Eye of Twilight means he can’t have relationships with someone he can never be impartial with. He can’t be impartial with Zed because A) he does love him B) can’t forgive him for the Kusho thing C) Zed is like really hot. I think also Shen is just so unaware of the freak privilege he had growing up. Zed having to work for everything Shen got naturally. (Not to say Shen doesn’t work hard. He does, but he was also the son of the head of the Kinkou while Zed is a literal peasant).
