Irene and Sherlock not really being friends, but having each other because they’re both the outcast of the class
They have adventures together with John ( kind of a Veronica Mars-esque mystery cases) and sometimes they work together, sometimes the other one’s the antagonist.
PROM NIGHT : Irene probably went with some guy she got on the side but missed Sherlock early in the night and decided to ditch the prom. When she breaks in to his house, Sherlock denies being lonely, but Irene knows better.
Their relationship is basically Irene being persistent in annoying Sherlock and Sherlock trying very hard to appear deadpan.
As a thought exercise, they plan out murders of professors they hate.
