Random Sorting - Anthea - Hufflepuff
Moving on to one of the characters we know the least about, Anthea. She is someone who’s name we don’t even know. All we know about her is what we can extrapolate from the work she does for Mycroft. Although we hardly see her, I find her to be a very interesting character because of all the open possibilities for her. This sorting probably won’t be as long as some of my others, just because of our lack of concrete information.
Let’s start with Ravenclaw. Intelligenge and a love and respect of creativity and knowledge are hallmarks of this house. Because of the fact that she works for the most intelligent man in the world, we can assume she probably posseses these traits, even if she expresses them in a different way then Mycroft. Unfortunately, many of the Ravenclaw traits and character comparisons are things we can only guess at.
Slytherin next. Starting with the scene we first encounter her in, Anthea is rather reminiscent of the lady of a Bond villain, someone who would probably be viewed as a Slytherin. She’s cool, amused, and detached. She plays with John throughout the the episode without holding any real interest in him. There is a huge difference between ASiP Anthea and TEH Anthea however. We can inerperet this as the evolution of her character based simply on what the writers needed her for, but we can also interperet this as the difference between her public and private face. I always had the idea that she plays up the Slytherin side of her to people other then Mycroft (and to some degree Sherlock).
Moving to Gryffindor, we find some interesting parallels. The rebuke that she gives Sherlock in TEH about the agent who died reminds me a bit of Hermione. She has a very strong backbone and is not at all cowed by either of the Holmes brothers and I feel like she is a very loyal character.
A lot of these traits are ones that can be connected to Hufflepuff. While she is probably very loyal to her work and to her country, her true loyalty seems to be to Mycroft. She is one of the few people who is trusted to know that Sherlock is alive and she probably was involved in covering for Mycroft while he was gone. There are of course some exceptions, but generally, Gryffindors are the most loyal to a cause, while Hufflepuffs tend to bond more strongly to an individual. Both groups have very strong house loyalty, but the utter devotion that many Hufflepuffs show is hard to match. As for bravery, you go against a badger at your own risk. I also love to see Hufflepuffs with snark, and the amusement she views Sherlock with in this scene is great. I’m often hesitant to put lesser known characters in Hufflepuff, simply because it is an unfortunite trope some people seem to fall into. In this case though, I feel it rather suits her.
