Rec: Imagine just the beginning of series 4: John’s marriage is on the rocks, Mary is still pregnant, Sherlock’s status is uncertain after killing Magnussen, and he hasn’t seen John since his return from near-exile. From there, the story takes elements of series 4 and remixes them into a gripping, strongly written casefic full of shocks and surprises that made a lot more sense and remained truer to the core of the series than secret mind-controlling supergeniuses and prison island deathtraps. And of course, far from driving Sherlock and John apart, the events serve as a prism to bring into focus the true nature of what they are to each other. At the same time, it’s not really a shippy fic for the most part, but I was more than satisfied with the relationship bits, and of course, “John is family; that’s why he stays.”

The author has not put a rating, but I would probably rate it Teen for violence. Warning for multiple character deaths (not John or Sherlock) which may nonetheless be upsetting.

What really gets me is that they had THREE YEARS to realise that they’d kind of written themselves into a corner and that there was an obvious out: they created a character (Mary) who lied about literally everything from her name on forward to John, tried to kill his best friend just to manipulate events to go to her liking and keep John from leaving her, so faking a pregnancy in a similarly manipulative move would have been right in character, spot on. But instead they bizarrely forgot which side Sherlock and John (and by dint of that, the audience in general) are on - aka the side of the angels, despite not being angels themselves - and decided that now, suddenly, they were both okay with having allied themselves with the exact sort of person they’d always worked against up until that point, that everything about Mary’s line of work was just fine and basically the same thing as theirs, except Mary was much, much smarter, and Mary was the only one of those three people who might get bored of staying at home with a kid, so she had to run off there - after attacking the same person she already tried to kill, after he tried to offer her his help AGAIN. But no, suddenly that was all okay, and having a baby spend her first year of life being bounced around from place to place because John was busy rage mooing and drinking and Sherlock was literally killing himself in his effort to save John from himself, but no - putting a baby in that situation makes PERFECT sense. Bravo, gentlemen. Bravo.
