“Flying machines; these, er, telephone contraptions ... What sort of lunatic fantasy is that?”
“It was simply my conjecture of what a future world might look like, and how you and I might fit inside it.”
Watson nods, and Holmes stands up. “You and I, in such a world, perhaps we would not be so misplaced. So... queer. Maybe we would belong, us. Might I even say we could be accepted.” With a long stride he eliminates the distance between the two armchairs.
Watson stands up as well, lips pursed into a thin line, brow furrowed, and he starts fumbling with Holmes’ cravat. “Are you sure it’s still just a seven percent solution that you take? I think you may have increased the dosage.”
Holmes shrugs his shoulders, his breath of cigars and tea falling softly on Watson’s face. “Perhaps I was being a little fanciful ...” he whispers pensievely.
Watson reaches for the nape of Holmes’ neck and pulls his head lower to capture his lips in a yearning kiss. “Our love needs not a name,” he whispers around their shared breath, hands cupping Holmes’ head, thumbs tracing soft circles on his cheekbones. “It is ours, it needs no recognition, no acceptance.”
Holmes’ long fingers are between them, fumbling deftly with the buttons on Watson’s waistcoat. “Perhaps... perhaps you are right, my dear Watson. But perhaps such thing might come to pass. In some distant future, you could be free to love me, with no shame or remorse.”
“My sentiments are not shackled. I love you here, now.” Watson lowers his hands to capture Holmes’ wrists and look at him straight in the eyes. “I love you, Sherlock. Most ardently.”
“That, then, my dear John, must be enough,” Holmes murmurs against Watson’s temple.
Behind the heavy, drawn, embroidered curtains, a small world is hidden, the inhabitants of which slowly stumble down the corridor and into Holmes’ chamber, waistcoats and cravats discarded to the floor. Outside the window, the fumes and horns of cars, embellished from the lights of tall skyscrapers, the flashing neon of the street shops illuminating the faces of people walking and looking at their phones, taking no account of what goes on inside the apartment of 221B Baker Street.

John wasn’t particularly quiet entering by the street door, but apparently no one heard him over the intense confabulation in progress.
Sally Donovan insisting, “You couldn’t get Appledore bugged, but there’s enough evidence for Watson to absolutely believe his wife isn’t who she said she is.”
Sherlock, sounding wretched: “I can’t tell him, I’ve given him enough misery for a lifetime.”
Greg, sighing mightily. “You don’t have to. But he has to be told.”
His mum taught him young that eavesdroppers hear no good of themselves, so John interrupted.
“Have to be told what? What do I have to be told?”
Mary’s surprise, and Mycroft’s, had been just about all the new information he could reasonably be expected to absorb in one day. Yet clearly this row of stricken faces knew something about Mary, maybe something he hadn’t heard yet.
Sherlock hadn’t even bothered to text him back, when he was most needed. Donovan: What she was doing in the flat was obvious, if unwelcome. But why was Greg here, why now?
