It’s midnight and we’re at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital with poor Sherman who has a urinary blockage. Our attentive volunteers @airric6 and @rachaelstpeter noticed Sherman was acting strange and straining while they were cleaning his barn this evening. We called our vet, Dr. Jess, immediately and she came right away to do a physical exam. She ended up sedating him, administering pain meds, performing a urethral process (a tiny tubelike appendage at the tip of the penis) amputation and removing a stone blocking his urethra. Urine was immediately released (sorry about your face, Dr. Jess 🤣) which gave him a little relief from the pressure. We then loaded a sleepy Shermy into the trailer (hooray for the new ramp!!!) and got him to UCD as quick as we could. They did a bladder ultrasound and could tell it was still very distended. They are now in the process of sedating him again to place a catheter directly into the bladder in order to drain the trapped urine. He will stay overnight to get pain meds and fluids to help with his discomfort. No news is good news overnight. In the morning, if the catheter is still in place, he’ll have X-rays to see if there are more stones present in the bladder itself. If there are stones, surgery will remove them. The tricky thing is that catheters don’t stay put in goats and sheep easily due to their unique anatomy and movement, often slipping out of the bladder. If it comes out overnight and the bladder becomes dangerously distended, emergency surgery will be performed. The initial estimate for Sherman’s vet care is between $1500-$2900 without additional complications. We paid half as a deposit from our emergency medical fund (thank you donors who have given to this fund in the past 🙏🏼)! When Sherman approaches for a pat or a kiss, he always does this adorable head tilt. 😍 Sherman was rescued from a backyard swimming pool (yes, he can swim!) in a suburban neighborhood about four years ago. He spent some time at the dog pound, which was no doubt quite a loud, scary place for a sheep who is naturally a prey animal. He was pulled from the shelter by @apmlodz transported by @rosiessanctuary and brought to @blackberrycreek where he made fast friends with the other sheep. Being comfortable around humans though took several years and the love and patience of @veggie_ghoul who would spend hours sitting with him quietly so he understood some humans are safe friends. It often takes a village to save an animal and provide lifelong care for him or her. When Sherman checks people out he does this adorable little head tilt. It’s his way of saying that he’s considering if he’d like to be snuggled or go on his merry way.
