Five years ago a tiny baby lamb came into our care after being rejected by his mother on a local farm raising sheep for wool and lambs for meat. Serendipitously, our vet, Dr. Natalie, happened to be on a ranch call at the farm and saved Finn, bringing him to @blackberrycreek where he will be safe and loved for his entire life. Finn’s story is a gentle reminder that rejection, no matter how painful, might actually be the thing that saves you. If you’re going through something difficult, remember brave little Finn (and then go watch some of his goofy baby videos in our story). Love will save the day. ♥️ #happyrescueversary #lambiepie #veganforhim #finneganmcschmooshles (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqW9hgGOYV_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
There is beauty in death, and mystery. And for our resident unicorn, Bill, more than a little magic. So often we humans see death through a lens of fear instead of embracing the mystery of the unknown. Bill had the kind of death we all hope for; a peaceful slipping away, a release from the pain of a chronic bone infection and subsequent crippling due to his selectively bred genetics. A drifting off to the Other Side, cozy in his bed after a lovely breakfast surrounded by those he loved most. This was not the death intended for Bill. Born on a Northern California farm raising turkeys for “humane” lunchmeat, he was meant to be killed at 5 months old for a sandwich. Commercially raised turkeys are not protected under animal welfare laws. Standard practice is to shackle them upside down by their feet, slit their throats with a rotating blade, and then place them in scalding tanks meant to loosen their feathers. Many who miss the blade are boiled alive. If this makes you sick to your stomach, that’s good. It should deeply trouble every compassionate person. If you’re still eating animals and justifying it with religion, culture, tradition, “humane washing,” sensory pleasure or anything else, you are quite literally paying for this to happen. Hard to hear? We know; we‘ve been there and have felt the shame and sadness. But just think how much harder it is to be the turkey. Once we know better, we must do better. As we did for Bill. As we will continue to do for all animals. Please join us and go vegan for Bill. Peace begins on your plate. #seeyouontheotherside #veganforhim #loveoneanother #friendsnotfood (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnP2xNEyVqm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Smudgecake is deaf and blind in one eye (after a stroke years ago) and as perfect and loving as they come. Please be kind to pigs. They are friends, not food. ♥️🐷 #loveoneanother #veganforhim #friendsnotfood (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjRuLm8uE21/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Happy #rescueversary week to our precious “little” Finnegan McSchmooshles! Finn was rescued from a local farm who raises sheep for wool and meat and would have become someone’s Easter lamb dinner if he hadn’t been saved by our friend and vet, @nstab6 ♥️ Four years later this little goofball loves his sheep/goat and human family, adores shoving his face full of hay, and is the goofiest guy, still marching to the beat of his own drum just like when he was a baby. Animals are unique individuals, deserving of life, love, and not being killed to satisfy human desires. We love you Finny. Happy birthday, baby. 🎉 #veganforhim #bekind #stopharminganimals #loveoneanother #farmanimalsanctuary #sheepofinstagram (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cbp1oNul_pD/?utm_medium=tumblr
✨ MacFarland is the oldest animal at the sanctuary, turning 19 this coming spring. Few famed animals get the privilege of living to old age, and Mac radiates wisdom and love. ✨ #macfarlandmagic #loveoneanother #friendsnotfood #veganforhim #cowhugger #bekind #cowsarefriendsnotfood #grasspuppy #macattack #macfarlandthehighlandcoo #scottishhighlands #scottishhighlandcattle #highlandcoo #eatplantsnotanimals (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZa_cTzLl_f/?utm_medium=tumblr

Sweet Smudgecake will be having a procedure done on his front hooves this morning. Though most pigs bred for human consumption have foot problems due to their unnaturally large body size, Smudgecake and his siblings have extra terrible hooves that frequently crack (see picture on right). While sedation is always dangerous in pigs, it’s worse to do nothing and let infection take hold in these painful cracks. Please send Smudgie all your extra love today and if you’re so inclined, you can donate $5 toward his vet bill on Venmo, PayPal or the link in our bio. #pigstagram #cutiepie #veterinarymedicine #veganforhim #vetmed #pigsofinstagram #friendsnotfood #smudgie #smudgecake #sanctuarylife #farmanimalsanctuary (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVVcX6ZF1DU/?utm_medium=tumblr
