Soft Skills Wanted
My advice to my nieces and the youth of America is to learn how to communicate! Verbal and written skills are seriously lacking in the majority of our workforce and candidate pools spanning all generations. I come across it every day with people I talk to and even my own co-workers.
To draw from my own personal experience and educational background, I made my first resume in 8th grade. It was on purple parchment paper and it was beautiful. I used that same resume template as a teenager when I got my first HR job. When do kids these days start learning to write resumes? (I’m so old!) When I worked in Workforce Development we trained 14-18 year olds in resume writing. My teens from WSEM better have held onto the templates we worked diligently to create with them. <3 When I see them posting Facebook updates about job offers it warms my heart.
Freshman year of high school we lived and died by 5 paragraph essays. By Sophomore year I was tutoring basics on how to organize and write essays. Sophomore year also included fun, exciting speeches (recorded and evaluated with a VHS equipped camcorder), presentations, and several important projects that helped develop us as professional, confident communicators. Those assignments taught me soft skills that I’ve never forgotten, even 15 years later.
Students need to write and present as much as they can. Those skills helped make college and office life a breeze for me. I never stopped making presentations and writing essays for school up until the very last day of my Strategic Management Capstone in Brazil before receiving my MBA. Every work day of my life I have to type formal letters and emails as well as present information to key stakeholders. I can’t stress enough how important those skills are.
I hope Alvin can come correct. We desperately need strong writers and speakers. I’m looking forward to giving some workshops at local colleges this year!
