“Hope is a backstabbing little wraith.”
She sat back, stretching her arms and reveling in the slight breeze chilling her skin. She hadn’t been out of her armour since the Grove’s attack, and was loath to be so now. A newly occupied point of interest might be at its most safest directly after (provided you attacked it right), but that didn’t mean a complete lack of fallout. There were still many mercenaries and Kossuth drones out there waiting amongst the salty planks and twine for her word of judgement. Loose threads never quite sat still in her mind, and no less in her strategy - it grated at her to be away from duty. But she could spare a few moments of dark reflection for the heroes of Brackenbridge, right? “But I’m not here to change your worldview, that’ll happen in its own time. I’m here to tell you to be careful with your newfound responsibility.” She nodded at Lyra. “Something I think a princess ought to be able to understand.”
She knew things had been flipped and tossed and turned upside down since she set out with this group. Her life would never return to simple journeys along well traveled roads, peppered with random romps, new songs, dingy bars, and true relaxation. So much hung over her head now. They could afford a single day of relaxation before Lyra needed to get on the road to see her brother. Shevra wasn’t doing too much to help ease the anxiety of the inevitable. It didn’t make her like Shevra’s company any less. Everyone else was asleep, they got to bask in the early morning light together, unarmored, unarmed, and at ease for the first time in a very long time. Lyra welcomed the change, but Shevra seemed ill at ease being so exposed.
“Hope is all Hamma had. All Mel...I mean...”
She cut herself off before saying his name. It was still a sore subject for most involved. Forgiveness was not easily given for such heinous actions. She knew this. But the poor guy didn’t deserve violence.
“I know hope isn’t everything. I’m not naive. I may have left home when I was young, I may have lived a sheltered existence before then, but life on the road has forced me to grow up. We’re going to give the people more than hope, we’re going to save them.”
