Whumpee and Caretaker got into an argument, to which Whumpee storms out... only to be kidnapped by Whumper, who plans to use Whumpee as bait for Caretaker. Lots of guilt and worry ensues on both sides 😉
-- @whumperofworlds
Caretaker turned the corner, biting down gently on their tongue from the anticipation. About an hour or so prior, Whumpee had called, entirely out of the blue, and asked them to meet up. Caretaker was hesitant to come to the location at first, after all, Whumpee didn’t have the best track record when it came to not letting people down.
However, it had sounded important. There had been an almost indiscernable quiver to their voice that Caretaker had picked up on. They were worried about something. Something troublesome enough to trigger them to call Caretaker of all people, despite the pair not being on the best of terms.
“Whumpee? C’mon, you told me to be here. If you’ve ditched me again, I swear to—“ they began, frustration evident in their tone, however they were unable to finish their complaint, startling easy at the sound of a sudden startling behind them.
It resembled that of a wild animal rusting about between the bushes, and so they spun around, the light from their torch bridging the gap between the darkness and the shine, revealing nothing but fallen leaves. If it had been a creature, it likely had scurried off by now.
“Are we looking for something?”
Caretaker’s heart dropped, torch almost slipping from their hands as all their muscles jolted momentarily as though that voice had been as sharp as an electric shock. Truth be told, it was close. A feeling indistinguishable from utter terror crawled up their throat, scratching at their windpipe. And still, in spite of their horror, they turned around to face their fears head on.
“Where are they?” They hadn’t meant to sound so startled. Their questioning was meant to have come across as much more fierce and threatening in a desperate attempt to try and shift the power away from the person in front of them. The cracks and fractures in their voice did nothing to solidify this.
“Caretaker, please, you’ll have to be a little bit more specific than that.” Whumper’s voice barely changed its intonation as they spoke, as though they were reading off instructions off of a box. Like their words and actions here really didn’t mean anything in the long run.
“Don’t play stupid, you’re not here by coincidence, strolling through the forest on a whim. Did you take them?”
If Whumpee was alone, they wouldn’t have had a chance fighting back against Whumper. Caretaker wondered silently if they had been trailing Whumper here, only to call for backup once they’d realised they’d been compromised. It would make sense for them to go off on their own, not telling a soul about their missions.
A darker, much more frightened part of them worried that wasn’t the case, and that instead something far worse had happened.
“You’re really here looking for Whumpee? That’s odd, wouldn’t have pegged you for the type to drop everything for them of all people. It certainly didn’t seem that way the last time you spoke.”
The pair had gotten into an argument during a mission. Whumpee had started to vanish unexpectedly, taking sick days off at the climax of a conflict only to show up at the end of things not a sniffle in sight. Caretaker, the one usually assigned as their partner, couldn’t handle doing all the work load alone.
Whumpee, in their true fashion, had stormed off, and (or so everyone had assumed) retreated into their usual sulks, not answering anyone’s calls or messages. Up until now.
“Did you—“ Caretaker asked, the question obvious despite it not being spoken in its entirety. Did you take them? Did you hurt them? Did you enjoy it? All the answers would be the same anyways. They knew Whumper’s kind.
“Relax yourself. I wouldn’t be telling you all of this if there wasn’t a deal I could be proposing, would I? After all, your team would probably just assume Whumpee vanished on their own accord without me approaching you like this. None of you would even bat an eye. So stop squirming and listen to what I have to say.”
Whumper paused for a moment, smiling softly as though the words about to come out of their bitter mouth were about to be kind and warm, like reassurance from a friend in your time of need.
“You know, it’s funny. I never thought I’d ever have anything over you, Caretaker. If something got in your way, you’d discard it like a broken toy, and if something was worth keeping, you’d never let it go. The only weak points you’d ever had were trapped firmly underneath those claws of yours, never to slip through and reveal something vulnerable. Well, until now.”
“Get to your fucking point.”
“I’ve been feeling quite benevolent lately, and as such you’ll find that Whumpee is in one adorable little piece. But, it won’t stay that way for long. You know what I want, Caretaker. We can do this without anyone losing their limbs.”
Caretaker mustered up a scowl. At the end of the day, they truly did care about Whumpee. Sure, they were undoubtedly immature, and yes, Caretaker had contemplated strangling them and being done with it for the first few months of their companionship, but that was their Whumpee.
Besides, either way, nobody deserved a fate like one delivered by the hands of Whumper. Nobody had been that cruel before, callous enough to deserve that ending.
“If I agree to this, they’ll get out of this unharmed?”
“They’ll get out of this in tact. Nothing the passage of time won’t heal over. Like I said, I’ve been kind enough to only stick to the essentials.”
Caretaker swallowed, guilt planting its seed in their stomach and promising to blossom into regret. They’d sworn that no matter what, they’d never cave to Whumper, despite how persistant their demands were. They’d told themself, told everyone, that their will was incorruptible.
Whumpee’s life was on the line, though. Did anything else matter more than that
“Fine. A deal’s a deal.”
Y'all really saw Batman!Shadow and went "Joker!Sonic!" without thinking. Like, c'mon, guys. We know there's only one Sonic-character pathetic enough to play an obsessed loser with an overinflated sense of self like the Joker
