Had the same wonderings and my questions had been answered by Davina Tham of Taipeitimes.com . . . . When sky lanterns fall, they fall randomly, with no regard for the best of human intentions that have been written on their paper skins. They indiscriminately pepper hillsides and river banks, invade backyards and impale themselves on trees. Some lanterns burn up when their internal flames catch the combustible lining, but others fall to the ground intact. Some lantern parts are made of biodegradable paper and bamboo, but the paper is painted and treated with chemicals, and can take months to disintegrate. Three times the train passed by when we were at Shifen, this was taken a few feet away from the track, notice the many tourists just few steps away from the train. Moments before I almost got run over by an old train in that old train tracks where the sides are narrow and there were hundreds of tourists taking selfies and sending lanterns into the sky. The train’s alarm sound was nerve wrecking, James even got a shot of my scared face but you won’t find that in this post. During my recent trip to Taiwan - we happened to visit the beautiful town of Shifen on a rainy evening. I would like to share some of the pics which I took there. there is an untold history which beams at us once we are at this hidden gem town. . .
