Feature: Types of Obi - Shigoki-obi しごき帯
Description: Not your normal obi, shigoki obi are made of a soft fabric with tassels on the ends. Also they don't get tied around your waist, instead they are tied at the level of your hips.
Traditionally shigoki obi were worn by girls at the 7-5-3 festival to help keep any excess kimono length from touching the ground. They are still worn today, but are purely decorative in nature.
Kitsuke: Wore at the base of normal obi and tied in a simple bow. It can either go underneath or slightly cover the normal obi.
Level of formality: It varies due to them being a non-traditional item for women, however, they are often worn with furisodes.
Measurements: The length can be anywhere between 2-4m, usually 30 cm wide.
Fabric: Normally made of silk.
Tips: Shigoki obi have been featured several times in KimonoHime, check out images out for ideas.
Some people recommend using shigoki-obi to hide a lack of ohashori.
You can use scarfs instead of the real thing, they do the same job.
Think of them as another way to add colour and personality to your kimono outfit.
