Why a Suae × Eunhyuk Ending Would Undermine Operation: True Love’s Own Critique
Operation: True Love isn’t just a romance; it’s a meta commentary on how romances are written. The author built a mirror story, The Black Rose of Versailles, to expose what she finds hollow about the genre’s familiar formulas.
i. Love in the Laundrymat (dohwa x reader)
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters in this one-shot. All characters belong to kkokkalee, the talented creator of the manhwa Operation: True Love.
This story may not meet your expectations, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. If you have any requests or suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment below!
Dohwa never thought much about his job at the laundrymat. It was just a way to earn some extra money while he focused on his studies. But everything changed the day he noticed Y/N. She was a regular customer, always coming in on Saturdays with a smile that could light up the room.
Refuting Arguments Against Baek Dohwa with pure and sheer reason and logic:
“Dohwa also ghosted Suae for 10 years.”
He was debuting. Everyone knew that. He changed schools, changed his phone number and moved away. There was not a way Suae and him could keep contact. Doesn’t mean neither of them wanted to grow apart. It just happened. It was a natural process. They met one last time. Meanwhile Eunhyeok gives her a phone call and when she doesn’t answer he simply LEAVES. And we don’t even know WHY. And he doesn’t even have the decency of breaking up with his girlfriend before leaving. And don’t even say that’s the author ruining Eunhyeok’s character because it happened in high school as well. Eunhyeok acts distant and ignores Suae out of nowhere, for no reason, and then comes back like nothing ever happened. I like him and I understand his traumas and struggles but come on. Go to therapy so you can hear again from your left ear (since is the one damaged due to psychological reasons like stress) and then go live your life as a successful music producer in the US.
“Dohwa kissed Suae without her consent just to get a reaction out of Eunhyeok”
She went on lots of dates with him??? She kept letting him in??? The only time she questions him and calls him out is when she thought he had a girlfriend, and it stops once the dating rumors are denied. If she really didn’t want the kiss, she wouldn’t have kissed him back. She would have just given a step back and tell him she’s not comfortable like she did that time. And Dohwa didn’t see Eunhyeok following them. He doesn’t lead Eunhyeok there purposefully. He just opens his eyes to check if there’s someone coming and sees him. At least that’s how it seemed like to me. Of course you can disagree on the reason why he opened his eye and looked at him, but the rest are facts: Dohwa confessed to her. He has real feelings for her. He wanted that kiss. He didn’t kiss her just for Eunhyeok to see. And Suae gave him and opening to do so and did not stop him. Just like all the moments they had before that.
“Dohwa is famous and dating a famous person in Korea is hard and they have a lot of dating rumors/scandals”
Realistically speaking, if you all want realism, there are many cases they date and get married in secret and it’s only revealed years later and no one cares. Also, I would get it if Dohwa was still a kpop idol but now he’s just an actor, this “no dating rule” is way less strict for actors than for idols. Many actors are known to have partners, from the industry or not. Also, about the scandals, people in this industry have dating rumors just by breathing next to someone else. If it’s not true, the label will deny it and people will move on. Simple as that.
“Dohwa orchestrated the reporter situation so Eunhyeok could find the camera and threaten/blackmail him”
HOW??? How could Dohwa possibly know the reporter or Eunhyeok would be at the parking lot? How could he know Eunhyeok would do what he did? He doesn’t know Eunhyeok well, and neither Eunhyeok knows Dohwa well. It is proven in the next chapter he didn’t know before there was a reporter tailing him and that’s why he made that uncomfortable expression, he was scared, as he should be. No Dohwa fan thought Eunhyeok was gonna blackmail him, I thought he was going to destroy it or something but he was actually smart in giving it to Dohwa so Dohwa could have proof that there is a crazy paparazzi stalking him.
“Dohwa did nothing for her”
They kept spending time together??? He read her favorite story for her??? Suae herself said being with him was comfortable and fun because of the good times they had. Wether you like it or not, he is a good person and not the mastermind villain some people claim him to be. He never tried anything with Suae once they started dating. He revealed his feelings because as they were friends she deserved to know. But he never interfered in her relationship with Eunhyeok back there. Before they started dating Dohwa said he was unlucky he didn’t have the opportunity to meet Suae before but he would pursue her now. And that’s it. After Eunhyeok and Suae started dating, he never made a move on her.
“Dohwa fell in love with Suae out of nowhere”
No he didn’t. They started to be friends because of a common interest (games) and Suae was the only one that noticed him past his looks and actually saw his heart, how he truly was. It was natural. They spent enjoyable, quality time together and Dohwa fell in love. Like, that’s how it usually goes in real life for a lot of people. Now Eunhyeok seemingly has a habit of being friends with shitty people. After all these years he’s STILL spending time with Raim (it’s never explained why) and he was friends with Minu. What even got Eunhyeok to be friends with that terrible guy? Was he terrible too? Was he part of Raim’s circle and as him and Raim knew each other through music he knew Minu too? Was Minu only a jerk to Suae but nice to everyone else? Eunhyeok even says Suae looks like a middle schooler. He probably didn’t mean bad, but it rubbed me in the wrong way how he did it in front of Raim and other people. If they had explained it like: “Eunhyeok fell for Suae at first sight but she was already with Minu so he approached Minu to be close to her and warn her” it would be more understandable because Eunhyeok was never truly Minu’s friend. But in the way it was written looks like Eunhyeok was genuinely friends with Minu and only stopped when he started to like Suae. If it’s so it wouldn’t have been a problem, but they never make it clear. Eunhyeok himself questions in his head if he ever liked Suae for real or just liked “being her savior”.
“Dohwa wanted to kiss her while she was sleeping and acted immature when Suae was dating Eunhyeok”
We was just looking at her??? And admiring her??? Y’all never heard of longing and yearning before??? Like it has happened before. A character admiring another when they are asleep. All he did was put his hand on her cheek, y’all are being a little too dramatic. And yes he was immature back there but like… he eventually stops and regrets it? He was a teenager, most teenagers are not mature, we see all of them doing immature things in it. I just don’t believe in double standards. If it was Eunhyeok having that moment with Suae asleep or Suae having that moment with Eunhyeok asleep, some people wouldn’t be hating. Same thing if Dohwa was the one dating Suae and Eunhyeok acted distant out of hurt.
I think the time skip just made the characters more beautiful tbh. It didn’t add anything else to the story. Aside from Dohwa, I still like Suae and Eunhyeok, but not as much as the first season. I know Suae will be with Eunhyeok at the end, so I hope the author actually puts effort into writing it in a way that makes sense. Because right now it doesn’t. I honestly don’t understand why some Eunhyeok fans accuse all Dohwa fans of just wanting Dohwa to “win”. No, I ship Suae with Dohwa for the same reason you ship Suae with Eunhyeok, I like Eunhyeok but I just like Dohwa better and I think he would be better for Suae lol. I think if Dohwa had met Suae before, he would do for her all the things Eunhyeok did, and if Suae and Eunhyeok had met later, Eunhyeok would do the things Dohwa did as well. Because they both genuinely love her. So I just hope when Suae and Eunhyeok inevitably get back together, Dohwa gets a happy ending too. Whatever choice Suae makes, she doesn’t own these man anything, she has to choose who she loves. I just hope she doesn’t lead them on. In season 1, even though I’ve always been team Dohwa, I actually liked Suae and Eunhyeok too, I found them cute and I would be okay if they stayed together. Right now, I know they will end up together anyway and I don’t like it but there’s nothing I can do to stop it lmao so I just hope the writer writes it in a way Eunhyeok can redeem himself for the way he left, Suae and Dohwa can stay friends and Dohwa either finds someone else to be with (someone he actually has chemistry with) or just keeps being happy in his career. I think the later is more likely, because I don’t think the author would put any effort into writing a whole new character just to be Dohwa’s love interest. Unless she could add anything to the story, but the chances are low. Also, Dohwa would never be with Raim. They don’t even interact anymore. They have never been an option to each other. Raim is too obsessed with Eunhyeok to see Dohwa that way and Dohwa is in love with Suae, who couldn’t be more different from Raim. So safe to say, they are not each other’s type. If they got together, it would not make any sense. Dohwa deserves better than her anyway. I think it’s clear they play the same role in the story (blonde person that is stopping the main couple from being together) but in different ways. Dohwa genuinely loves Suae and wants to be with her, and is putting an effort to make her like him, spending time together making his feelings clear but without pressuring her or pushing her boundaries. He is willing to wait for her. Raim is not in love with Eunhyeok. She just wants to have him. Because she thinks he’s an equal and without him she’s all alone. So that was my analysis. Thank you. I discovered an actual good webtoon with great writing (and no love triangle thank God), a manhua (Chinese) called Only For Love/Accidental Love/Love By Mistake (don’t know which one is more accurate to the original Chinese title) and I finished it in 2 days, can’t wait to read more. Am I gonna drop this? No. Because I can’t. I’m too curious. I need to know what happens next. Even if it’s bad, I’ll keep going. Let’s see where it leads me. Bye.
