Shima Onsen (四万温泉) is known as the hot springs area which can cure 40,000 aliments which you can be seen in its name in Japanese. Sekizenkan hotel which is supposed to be one of the images used for Ghibli’s anime “Spirited Away” is said to be Japan’s oldest hot spring hotel as the main building was built in 1691. The main building which is much more affordable compared to the rest of the hotel can be used as it’s was originally used, as a 湯治場 (TOJIBA; place for long stays so you can recuperate through hot springs bathing). Here the WCs are shared and no maid service. But if you like delicate Japanese wood workmanship (and a WC in your room…), the Sanso building may be your forte. Built in 1936, the Sanso Building was created using the elegant techniques of builders at the time.
