Small point of clarification for the new folks, since this got someone recently:

In We Get What We Deserve the ‘dragons’ are beings masquerading as dragons as people who would have lived in Japan hundreds of years ago might have expected. What I’m not trying to posit is that the dragons present in Japanese mythology were eldritch horrors.

Think of changelings: They took on the guise of something familiar to gain access to what they wanted.
