“Colors are acts of light”, he wrote, “acts and suffering”. Reading these words for the first time, I felt as if an age-old mystery had been solved in an instant. Light is bent, divided, and made to reside in our world as color. We extract color from plants and dye it into fabric. Isn’t this the same, at root, as the way we ourselves are colored by the phenomena we encounter and the suffering we endure in this world? Both could be called a journey of light. Nature reveals its secrets to anyone who pays close enough attention.
