When Ricky’s father had told him that they were moving, he had taken it pretty HARD. He hadn’t wanted to leave East High and his friends behind, especially not with what they had been through TOGETHER, but he also understood that his father needed a fresh start. He had barely been able to look at pictures of Nini after they had broken up, and he couldn’t imagine what it must have felt like for his Dad to still live in the house where they had shared so many memories, but where it had also all fallen apart.
And maybe California wasn’t TOO BAD. In fact he had very fond childhood memories of it, and while packing his stuff, Ricky had come across an old photo of a girl that had lived just down the street. JULIE. They had played together often, goofing around and making music, as well as that was possible for ten year olds, but when Ricky had moved, they had lost touch. Hell, he wasn’t even sure if she still lived here, or how big the chances were that they were going to go to the same school.
So Ricky had tucked the photo away and tried to forget about it, right up until his FIRST day of school. He was early, setting up his new locker, when he spotted her. It was almost funny how he INSTANTLY recognized her, even years after not having seen her. His lips involuntarily curved into a smile as he watched her stand at her own locker for a moment, and Ricky briefly considered not going over, because what if she didn’t remember him? But the urge to talk to her was too big, so he eventually picked up his bag and made his way over, leaning against the locker.
“Hey,” He managed, “So...I’m NEW, and I was wondering if you’d be able to show me the way to my first class,” If she didn’t know who he was, then he could still play this off as having picked her RANDOMLY for directions. This was going to be fine.

Charlie had yet to exhaust herself skating laps around Cal and his tag-along, but she decided to take a break anyway. She rolled over to the edge of the rink, stepped out and leaned against the wall to get a view of all the skaters. She took her phone out to snag some pics of her awkward, fumbling sibling as he completed perhaps his fourth circuit in the last half hour. Just as she caught a glorious shot of him falling on his ass and being laughed at by a mop-headed tween, she realized she recognized Cal’s antagonist as Julie Molina’s younger brother.
She put her phone away and scanned her surroundings with an innocent curiosity, wondering if Carlos had come to the rink with any teenage supervision.
Oh -- and there she was! Julie wasn’t struggling nearly as much as Cal had been, but she was still making her way around the rink with enough clumsiness for Charlie to find an excuse to approach.
With the grace of an ice dancer, Charlie launched herself back into the rink and caught up to Julie in seconds. She slowed her pace to match the other girl’s and spun around so that she was skating backward, facing her. “You want a hand?” She asked, forgoing a proper greeting, and then held both of hers out to take if Julie so pleased.
“ i just like seeing you happy. ”
and the ridiculously bright grin on his features as he peers at the dream box julie’s presented him with—— more lyrics , more songs , more time to spend with julie—— shifts into something softer at her words , and eyes go soft , big and round , like a puppy dog , like he’s not heard anyone say that to him before . ❝ oh , ❞ he breathes out , soft , only a whisper , ❝ i—— i like seeing you happy too . i like your smile . ❞
I think @shinemade is so kind and so so talented ! I love speaking with Dee and every time she is on the dash, I know I’m about to read something amazing !

the request comes suddenly & she can almost feel the questions climbing to the tip of her tongue . one look at him tells her it’d be better to comply than waste time trying to get him to tell her what the mystery gift could be . so she turns to him fully , eyes fluttering shut as her open hands reach in front of her . a warning is , however , firmly voiced . “ just so you know , if i feel anything slimy , it’s ending up in your hair . “
A small CHUCKLE escapes his lips at her implications, while he waits for her to close her eyes. “No slime, I promise,” he then nods, before placing the gift in her hands. It’s a leather notebook, with her name engraved at the bottom. The first page consists of a picture of them that Ricky remembered to be from first grade, and the rest of the pages have an occasional sticker that reminded him of HER, and some song lyrics written at the bottom or top. Both lyrics that he had come up with, but also lyrics they had written together as kids. Granted, most of them had been about ice cream, but there had been some pretty good ones in there, too. “SURPRISE,”
