he's  here  to  talk  ,      mainly  ,      after  a  tiring  day  of  running  all  over  town  :      the  setup  day  had  him  hauling  his  equipment  more  than  he  liked  .      talking  doesn't  need  to  come  with  food  :      in  fact  ,      it's  always  better  without  it  .      means  he  can  open  his  mouth  and  talk  without  fear  of  having  to  pause  between  a  thought  and  the  words  that  should  come  with  it  .      he's  had  a  drink  .      just  one  .      not  enough  to  disturb  him  for  anything  .      so  when  he's  come  to  sit  back  at  the  bar  counter        in  the  hopes  ,      of  course  ,      for  another  glass of foam        he's  surprised  to  see  her  setting  down  a  full  plate  in  front  of  him  .      some  meal  that  someone  else  ordered  ,      he  reckons  .      and  he's  intent  on  correcting  her  .

@shinemade .      he  only  had  a  glass  of  whiskey  so  far  ,      something  he  always  got  whenever  he  stopped  in  .      tonight  ,      however  ,      she  placed  the  plate  of  food  in  front  of  him  as  he's  sitting  at  her  bar  .      she  knew  he  was  about  to  protest  so  she  stops  him  before  he  can  even  get  a  word  out  ,      putting  her  hand  up  .      "look  ,      you  can  pay  me  back  for  it  whenever  you  can  ,      just  please  eat  .    "  what's  sat  down  in  front  of  him  is  the  house  special  ,      some  freshly  cut  french  fries  and  a  cheeseburger  with  everything  on  it  .      something  hearty  for  a  man  like  him  .

he's  got  his  mouth  open  like  some  houseplant  inviting  flies  around  its  leaves  ,      and  he's  quick  to  shut  it  once  he  realizes  how  ridiculous  he  looks  .      now  ,      from  his  view  ,      there's  no  reason  for  martha  to  give  him  something  out  of  her  stock  without  demand  for  pay  for  all  that  work  and  ingredient  .        but  a  free  meal  isn't  one  he  takes  lightly  ,      neither  .

❝        thank  you  ,        ❞        is  what  he  says  ,      plucking  him  a  fry  between  his  index  and  his  thumb  and  prodding  it  along  some  of  the  sauce  from  the  burger  that  so  happens  to  be  flowing  over  the  bottom  .      funny  ,      how  he  hadn't  said  a  word  to  her  about  how  he  was  hungry  ,      like  she  seemed  to  know  he  was  without  being  told  .        ❝        thanks  a  lot  .      this  is  real  kind  of  you  .        ❞        he  waves  the  fry  at  her  ,      then  bites  it  in  half  .        ❝        but  it  ain't  your  job  to  worry  'bout  whether  or  not  i'm  eatin'  .        ❞

initial answer is a hiss through clenched teeth, fidgeting in discomfort when she touches his arm experimentally. too wary is he of anyone that isn't part of the very small group of people he has known for years and trusts. somewhat at least. it's even harder with an almost - stranger.

" no . . . " he groans, defiantly, before the arm in question is pulled gently from the other's grasp. he cradles it in his other, turning fully to face her to offer a forced smile. " it's nothin', probably. i bend like that naturally ! you don't ? "

something  in  him  tells  him  he  doesn’t  have  a  week  left  here  .      something  in  the  wind  has  changed  .      something  approaches  on  the  horizon  of  these  few  days  ,      and  he’s  not  sure  he  has  the  strength  to  fight  another  battle  like  this  .      his  lungs  hurt  worse  every  day  ,      and  he  feels  more  tired  than  ever  ,      as  though  something  in  his  body        or  perhaps  his  entire  body        is  refusing  to  get  back  up  again  .

@shinemade .      she's  not  a  fool  ,      she's  sees  it  as  plain  as  day  .      he's  sick  .      very  sick  .      still  ,      she  doesn't  want  him  to  see  her  upset  .      so  ,      she  forces  herself  to  act  like  things  are  fine  nonetheless  .      "we're  still  on  for  dinner  next  week  ,      right?    "  martha  asks  him  ,      taking  his  hands  ever  so  gently  .      "know  this  little  place  in  st  .      denis  ,      oh  you'd  love  it  there  i  just  know  it  .    "

there  is  nothing  arthur  wants  to  do  more  than  to  reassure  martha  that  everything’s  going  to  be  all  right  ,      the  same  way  he  always  reassures  the  rest  of  the  gang  .      but  those  days  ,      he’s  known  for  weeks  and  endless  days  ,      have  long  passed  .      lately  ,      he’s  barely  mustered  up  enough  of  a  voice  to  croak  out  his  own  ‘never  been  better’s  toward  those  who  ask  .      nothing  about  the  gang  is  good  anymore  .      barely  anyone  left  at  camp  ,      and  those  who  do  stay  to  support  dutch  .      it  doesn’t  feel  ,      to  arthur  ,      as  though  there’s  much  left  to  support  .      least  of  all  a  plan  .      they’re  grasping  at  straws  and  frayed  seams  that  are  days  away  from  bursting  .      he has the looming feeling that there  will  be  no  opportunity  for  him  to  return  to  saint  denis  ,      very  soon  .

these  thoughts  pass  through  his  expression  in  a  flicker  of  sadness  .      what  he  really  wants  to  do  is  reassure  her  ,      tell  her  that  of  course  they’re  still  on  for  next  week  ,      that  he’ll  try  to  make  it  there  .      if  he  were  a  better  man  ,      he  would  tear  down  her  hopes  .      but  he  can  taste  blood  on  his  tongue  ,      and  he  knows  better  .        ❝        sure  ,        ❞        he  says  ,      quietly  and  hoarsely  .      his  throat  hurts  from  the  coughing  ,      insides  scratched  by  sick  ,      bloodied  air  and  a  thousand  useless  swallows  .      he  squeezes  her  hand  back  ,      looking  down  at  her  fingers  .      he’d  like  to  eat  somewhere  nice  sometime  .        ❝        sure  ,      martha  .        ❞

the door behind the outlaw creaks and previously so curious fingers spring from the unlabeled jug he's been investigating like it is made of acid. in one swift motion they reach for his gun, ready on the trigger as he spins around to face the woman standing in the doorway of the small shack, who now has him trapped at the scene of his intended crime that has not yet been executed. too slow was he to properly identify the object of longing before making his move. but he had to be sure. there was merely a guess but no clarity with the bottle still closed. even when the inside of the shack itself is adorned with a familiar, not at all off - putting smell. his hostile greeting for his unknowing host might be uncalled for, but he's quick to draw these days. a life on the run will do that to you. this time, however, it might have been a little too late. he's lucky she hasn't shot him for it yet.

" neat stuff you got in here, miss. " he tries with factitious charming tone instead, though revolver remains pointed. there's a cautious yet amused look in his eyes. it seems he might not be the only criminal here. " no chance this might be moonshine ? "

BIRTH , AM I RIGHT !!! another year older and nothing to show for it except for this nifty blog , so thank you for dooming me to a life of cowboys by being the one who got me this game to try out in the first place . un/fortunately i am waist deep in this and i can't get out .

it’s  been  days  too  long  since  the  last  time  he  had  journaled  or  drawn  anything  .      he's  spent  too  much  time  on  the  road  lately  ,      running  errands  and  gambits  and  quietly  purloining  from  abandoned  homesteads  and  empty  buildings  ,      but  he  always  has  the  itch  to  tug  his  journal  from  his  satchel  and  note  down  the  small  and  ,      perhaps  ,      uneventful  .

it’s  now  ,      sitting  in  the  corner  of  martha’s  shack  with  a  small  cup  of  blackberry-flavoured  moonshine  on  the  table  beside  him  ,      where  he’s  finally  found  the  time  to  mark  the  progress  of  the  past  half  month  .      he’s  two  cups  through  already  ,      trailing  the  lead  of  his  pencil  across  the  page  and  glancing  to  martha  every  so  often  as  she  works  to  inspect  and  refill  her  small  tanks  .      regrettably  ,      he  can  only  sketch  in  grey  ,      but  he’s  sure  he’s  captured  the  red  glow  of  her  hair  in  the  dual  values  he’s  added  to  each  strand  of  hair  .      every  so  often  ,      he  thinks  of  another  sentence  to  add  to  his  journaling  page  and  scrawls  it  down  .

with  a  start  ,      arthur  lets  go  of  his  pencil  ,      lets  it  roll  into  the  middle  crease  to  mark  his  page  ,      and  half-shuts  the  pages  :      enough  that  a  few  fall  gracefully  over  his  work  in  progress  .        ❝        jesus  ,        ❞        he  mutters  ,      intending  full  well  to  bluff  .        ❝        don’t  go  sneakin’  up  on  me  like  that  .      i  ain’t  got  much  room  to  mess  up  on  this  .        ❞        unwilling  to  tell  her  the  subject  of  his  sketch  ,      he  clears  his  throat  ,      straightening  up  in  his  seat  and  finishing  the  rest  of  his  cup  of  moonshine  before  continuing  .        ❝        i'm    …    drawin'  things  i  probably  shouldn't  be  . nothin' important .      why  ?        ❞
